Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 You want to see Baltimore winning 17-3??? what is wrong with you?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 Kikuchi settled, which now leaves Keuchel and a bunch of lower end types. Stroman’s trade market might expand now.

Ehjays Verified Member Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 This from Ricky Romero rickyro24 Dear baseball, thank you for the memories. Memories that I will cherish forever. To my teammates and coaches - many of which I’ll call friends for life - it was an honor. Toronto, and actually the whole country of Canada - I love you. Canada, thank you for showing so much love to this young kid from East Los Angeles. I did it, I lived it, and and now it’s time to officially announce that I’M DONE. I tip my hat to the fans and to this beautiful game I was blessed to play. To my family, thank you so much for the support throughout my career... I love you guys!!! Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Yankees sign Troy Tulowitzki for league min. Interesting move for them.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Yankees sign Troy Tulowitzki for league min. Interesting move for them. Filling in for Didi. Pretty good fit for Tulo, but a little surprising for the Yankees imo.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 David Robertson to the Phils. 7 of the past 8 years he's given teams 1.5+ WAR over 60-69 innings (and the one year he missed 1.5 WAR he posted 0.9). Remarkably consistent as far as relievers go.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 A look ahead at the 2019 FA list: Sale Cole Rendon Arenado Bogaerts JD Martinez (if he opts out) Goldy K.Davis Verlander Donaldson Bumgarner Didi M.Ozuna Gennett Mikloas Puig Wheeler Porcello Betances I mean some (most?) won't actually make it to free agency, but that is one hell of a sexy list. Given our win trajectory, I'm excited to see if we decide that next year is the year to add through free agency.

Shouldn't cost too long term of a deal given his age, and we'll need a 1B since it's Smoaks last year. We have the 3rd lowest commitments in all of baseball for 2020 ($16M) only behind the White Sox ($6.7M) and the Twins ($300K). Martin and Morales will be off the books and Tulowitzki's salary drops down. It would be the perfect time to make a big splash.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 I'd be very surprised if we add anything from that sexy list. you can be as pessimistic as you want, but you're basing that off how an old regime operated the club and assumptions on what you think the Ownership group will allow. That seems incredibly shortsighted. As noted, we'll have next a pile of payroll flexibility as of 2020 and with a young core of Vlad, Bo, Jansen, Biggio, Alford, SRF, Borucki, Zeuch, Paulino + guys like Groshans, Pearson, Pardinho, Smith, Martinez, Hiraldo, Koffenstein, Conine, Spanberger, Kirk, Danner, Perez, etc. on the way - 2020 might be the best time to add a couple of FA's to the young mix.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 Yeah no one really knows how Shapiro will operate with a bigger payroll + financial flexibility. He took over a team that had a relatively big payroll but was old and had no flexibility, so being cautious was the right way to go. A year or two from now if the young players are looking good and the team could use a vetrin boost, it would make sense to add free agents. I wouldn't rule it out. I think Shapiro is more likely to spend big in free agency than he is trading good prospects for vets.

Would be a good time to grab a couple high profile guys and front load the hell outta the contracts. Cole + Goldy. He can play 1B for a few years until Vlad needs to get shifted over, then let him DH for a couple years.

He's been significantly more valuable than Harper over the past 3 years, although he's 2 years older.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 Atkins, pick up AJ Cole immediately. Thank you.

I'm basing it off the fact that I don't think this regime is going to spend until we see some on field success...and I don't see that happening for at least a couple of seasons. So no, I don't think they'll want to commit to any significant FA's until they see the fruits of their labour in terms of success from some of the names you've listed above. I don't think we're as close as you do. Typically, rookies don't just show up and hit the ground running. That's rare. It will take this group a little time. Edit: Besides...the management group may be different but the ownership group remains the same. Who's to say that their philosophy hasn't remained the same. We'll know for sure once this team starts making noise.

No way Rogers is willing to wait 3 or 4 more years for the team to become good. I think the winter after the 2020 season is when Shapiro starts spending, but I don't think he waits until the big league team is ready for it. Not with this ownership group. They have forced contention windows before with other GMs. Have no doubt they'll try it again when they are sick of the poor attendance.

I just get the feeling that Shatkins would prefer to not be rushed building it up. But you're right...Rogers has interfered before and I'm sure they will again.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 And I say this still having a hard time not believing Sale hasn't had major arm issues with that delivery, but he could be a good pickup, albeit expensive. What would it take, 4 years? 5? More? He'd be right in that 2021+ realm of actually being a strong team. And I like Goldy, but something tells me (and I realize I am disagreeing with 100% of you) that Rowdy Tellez can be a good, bat first, 1B. On the cheap.
