Slade Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 He is under no obligation to tell Scott Mitchell or anyone any information he doesn't want public or is in the middle of gathering information to make. Absolutely you are right but he does have a problem communicating. His interviews are trash and doesn't know how to convey his message properly. I absolutely can see him having problems communicating internally, it already happened with Borucki seeing Dr James Andrews and when they needed Nikki Huffman to address the media regarding Giles. Look at all the dumb s*** Montoyo said in his interviews which shouldn't happen if the message is clear from the top. You can't deny that the guy needs to get better at this. I've even seen Shapiro do interviews to clarify the direction of the team cause Atkins does such a poor job at it. Usually when the casual fans don't get something I chalk it up to them being dumb but I don't think that's the case with Atkins.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 I think we may have found something in Wilmer Font. He's looked awfully good as an opener.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 I think we may have found something in Wilmer Font. He's looked awfully good as an opener. He's been a guy pegged as a breakout candidate for a few years now
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 That was Scott McArthur lol Spanky sometimes gets his Scott’s mixed up. Well, hell, forgive me for mixing up two Scott M's that have worked at TSN in the last calendar year covering the Jays..
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 Someone make a game thread so I can show how annoyed I am that Jansen is going to lose ABs to McGuire and Smoak. Nothing wrong with giving McGuire AB's.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 He's been a guy pegged as a breakout candidate for a few years now I'm not sure about a few years. I saw him pitch Independent League in Ottawa I think only 3 years ago. I was surprised to see a familiar name and he ended up with the Jays later in the year.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 Today's 8.19 xFIP begs to differ. 1 walk and 19 K's in 14 innings with the Jays is pretty good.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 1 walk and 19 K's in 14 innings with the Jays is pretty good. He also has quite a number of infield flies which are effectively just as good as strikeouts.

Ray Verified Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 I'm not saying Wilmer Font is or isn't good, but he'd hardly be the first 29 year old to break out. Especially pitchers who tend to figure it out later than position players.

Here's one: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/i-should-explain-this-wilmer-font-thing/ I understand what you are saying but that was written last year. Anyways, I'm happy that we have him now. He's earning himself a spot on next year's roster. If we intend to stick with questionable starters like Waguespack and Pannone then an opener like Font will be valuable.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 What does he project as long term...a number 3 or 4 starter? At 29 years of age I think that we should keep using him as an opener or a reliever.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 I'm actually pretty excited to see Rowdy get some at bats to see if he's made some adjustments that carry over.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 I'm not expecting Font to stick. He's been cut by three smart FOs in the last two years, and his 2019 numbers on the aggregate are pretty bad. Pretty good 16-inning stretch though. Maybe Pete Walker has unlocked what TB, LAD, and OAK couldn't.... but that would be pretty shocking.

Maybe Pete Walker has unlocked what TB, LAD, and OAK couldn't.... but that would be pretty shocking. I think there's always something to be said that the smart FOs acquired him in the first place. For instance someone like Oliver Drake was passed around the league last year, by several well run teams, and it looks like he's found a modicum of success with the Rays this season. It's very unlikely that we found "it" with Font but he's got some good stuff and is a reliever so you never know, he could have an excellent stretch for a season/season and a half and then turn back into pumpkin, which would be just peachy for us.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 So you figure he should either be a starter or a reliever. Bold analysis here. There isn't a functional difference between a reliever an opener. Grant was saying Font should be limited to 1-2 inning appearances.
Todd Van Anus Verified Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 There isn't a functional difference between a reliever an opener. Grant was saying Font should be limited to 1-2 inning appearances. That's not what Grant said. He said "opener or reliever". I'm assuming an "opener" is a starter.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 That's not what Grant said. He said "opener or reliever". I'm assuming an "opener" is a starter. Well that's a dumb assumption, fitting for an anus to make.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 That's not what Grant said. He said "opener or reliever". I'm assuming an "opener" is a starter. An opener is a reliever who pitches an inning or two before the bulk guy (a starter) comes in for 4+ innings.
Todd Van Anus Verified Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 An opener is a reliever who pitches an inning or two before the bulk guy (a starter) comes in for 4+ innings. Well I've never seen that except for in exceptional circumstances. An "opener" is not a regular role.
Todd Van Anus Verified Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 Well that's a dumb assumption, fitting for an anus to make. More of a dumb comment for Grant to make considering an "opener" is not a regular role. It is only used in exceptional cases.
