glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 No one is taking Grichuk's contract. The only time he might be movable is after year 2, assuming he bounces back next year, since they front loaded his deal. At this point I think putting Smoak through waivers is the right call. Either call Tellez up, or use 1B for some combination of Biggio, Drury, and whoever else. Smoak is not someone the team should re-sign and he is taking AB's away from players in a lost season. Cut bait.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 The trade to acquire Gausman/O'Day didn't work out very well for Atlanta.
flafson Verified Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 I wouldn’t mind picking up pitchers like Gausman to be honest.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 I wouldn’t mind picking up pitchers like Gausman to be honest. Pete Walker will fix him.
flafson Verified Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Pete Walker will fix him. Ken Giles says hello.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 I wouldn’t mind picking up pitchers like Gausman to be honest. Agreed. We basically have a few bullpen days right now that I'd much rather see actual starters take. Matt Harvey is still out there. Who knows, maybe something clicks and they decide they want to stay? We need some sort of bodies to bridge the gap.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Stop it! Not until the Jays sign Harvey and he gas cans his way out of my heart.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 So Vlad wins AL player of the week and we move him down a spot in the order and Smoak up who is 0-8 against Morton...why lol
flafson Verified Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 So Vlad wins AL player of the week and we move him down a spot in the order and Smoak up who is 0-8 against Morton...why lol Maybe if he has protection from Vladdy behind him he will get a few more cookies to hit.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Maybe if he has protection from Vladdy behind him he will get a few more cookies to hit. In all fairness, who gives a f*** about Smoak getting a few extra cookies to hit. Vladdy should be batting fourth based on merit alone, nevermind the fact that he's a major piece of our future and Smoak is obviously not. Maybe Smoak has nice SSS vs Morton, idk, but it's f***ing embarrassing. Edit.. Didn't see where Smoak is 0-8 vs Morton. Double up on the embarrassment.

The Rays really work their pen, and they have a good one, so I think the idea is to make sure they can't match up as effectively. I would argue that Vladdy and Gurriel should be swapped in this instance though.
keggy Verified Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 I don’t think any AA move has worked for the Braves except signing JD. Dude inherited a gold mine. The Braves free agent signings have been excellent value (Donaldson, McCann, Keuchel). They extended Acuna and Albies to franchise-changing surplus contracts. They have a better farm system than Toronto (largely inherited), and they have a first-place team at the MLB level that wasn't constructed by selling high-value prospects (Anthopoulos' biggest criticism in Toronto). So yeah, Atlanta's front office is superior to Toronto's at all aspects of baseball except possibly drafting.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Maybe if he has protection from Vladdy behind him he will get a few more cookies to hit. I can't remember for sure, but I think the data says the best hitters should be 1, 2 and 5... on account of 5 leading off the inning the second inning the most. Maybe that's complete ********, maybe it's 1,2 and 4. Maybe the optimal lineup has Vlad lead offf, just get him the most at bats. I don't know, and don't feel strongly about this. I suspect the data says the best two hitters should be 1,2 and the 34d best hitter should be four or 5... but since Vlad is the best hitter he should really be 2... unless you think Bo is the best hitter. Well it should be Bo Vlad who cares Biggio Smoak who care *4

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Also I forgot about Gurriel... but I think just agree with Tercet that Gurriel is just another interchangable hacker who will have a .310ish on base percentage with power, who is just hot right now, but is the same as Grichuk, Fisher, Hernandez, etc... when you give them all 1500 at bats it will just work out the same. NOTE: I do not think I am special for evaluating Gurriel that way. I just looked at his minor and major league stats, and saw him play in New Hamphshire early last year. I remember him looking quite a bit taller and more athletic than Vlad.. I don't have vivid memories of him swinging (or not swinging) at a low slider... so can't predict his future based on that pitch.
tercet Verified Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 310 obp? are u on crack that is his best case outcome, as much as it cringes me to say, he is a worse hitter then the mirage.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Here is the optimal lineup using steamer projections, 4.861 runs per game: Smoak Guerrero Jr. Fisher Grichuk Bichette Gurriel Jr. Galvis McGuire Biggio Worst lineup at 4.510 runs per game: Galvis McGuire Gurriel Jr. Biggio Fisher Smoak Bichette Guerrero Jr. Grichuk
keggy Verified Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 didnt the braves suck for a long time They won the division in 2013, were between mediocre and bad for four years, won the division again in 2018 and will presumably win again this year.

Simply by being near the peak of a competitive cycle does not make them a better run franchise.
keggy Verified Member Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Simply by being near the peak of a competitive cycle does not make them a better run franchise. Fair enough. However I would also argue that comparing transactions over just the past three years is quite favorable to the Braves though.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 So..... Could this waguesback stick.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 Nice dp turned by Vladdy and Biggio, nice to see.
