The Jays have a tonne of money to spend. It's not easy getting free agents to come to Toronto. It's time to start extending guys like Stroman and Giles instead of rolling the dice on guys like Pivetta. Pivetta could turn things around, or he might just prove he's more of a number 5 than a number 2 or 3. There's far less risk with Stroman. I'd easily extend him for 3 or 4 years.

 

I agree with you. The idea that everyone must be shipped off in order to continue the rebuild is exhausting. Stroman isn’t going to cost a ton, has expressed a desire to stay and is pretty low risk as far as pitchers go.

 

I’d try and extend him for 5 years, buying the last year of arb and four FA years. I don’t think he would sign without the fourth year but who knows. That’ll make him a FA again at 33. Front load it a bit while the cash on the books is low.

2021- 16M

2022- 16M

2023- 12M

2024- 12M

Breaking.... blue jays sign Ben Revere!

 

Minor league contract for anyone ready to lose their s***. Honestly though, he's not a bad option as a bench bat / 4th outfielder. Doesn't strike out, can swipe a bag in a key situation, and you don't mind if he doesn't play 90% of the time.

His reasoning is crap, but I certainly wouldn't be opposed to signing Stro for 4 or 5 years at a reasonable rate.

 

Fun fact, Stroman has twice the WAR of the next highest Jay this year.

 

I do have one concern though, Stroman is throwing a lot of sliders this year. A LOT. That might not be good for his arm longer term.

Stroman is the kind of guy this board would be salivating over if he was on another team. Great ground ball rates, durability, seemingly untapped K potential. He’s the next logical extension candidate in my eyes.
