Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Gord Ash's ascent to the throne was astonishing. Bachelor of Arts from York Teller at CIBC Lands his dream job - ticket window guy for Blue Jays Promoted to a middle manager job in "Operations" Promoted to Director of "Stadium Operations" Promoted to Player Personnel administration role Promoted to AGM (15 years after York). Five years later, begins his reign as the worst GM in franchise history. HOW!? Dude was a f***ing climber. Of course he's from f***ing York.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 New Spring Training hats are in.... https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/1711084 Jays rank 22nd. Same s***** concept with a maple leaf on a hat. So stupid. Tigers + Marlins make some pretty awesome hats. Ones I would consider wearing even though each team is s***. As a die-hard conservative I greatly approve that A's hat. Washington's hat looks good. The Cincy hat looks like something 50 Cent would wear. I got a chuckle out of the Royals hat. That Angels logo with a crown. Maybe you can pull it off if your team's not going to lose 90+ games. I don't get the love for Milwaukee's bm hat.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 As everyone is s***ing on Ash, I'll be the Devil's Advocate and remind everyone he was the guy in charge when the Jays got Cruz for two average relievers. So that in itself should increase his rank a bit. Of course he was also blocked from doing that horrid Astacio trade but did manage to pull off Loaiza. And the David Wells trade lol. I still think Ricciardi is worse. He was good at constructing the 25-man roster with valuable filler, but was horrid where it counted on the draft and development end of things. The Jays drafted Halladay, Wells, Rios and Young under Ash. Not bad even if he traded or wanted to trade them all away for rentals. My ranking of the 5 GMs is: Gillick Atkins AA Ash Ricciardi

At the end of the day, the GM job's is to win a WS. Gillick did that and had highly competitive teams. AA built two playoff teams The others, nada.

AA also went broke earlier and with nothing to show and maybe made one of the worse trades that i can remember this franchise making (Trading Thor +) for a 40+ year old knuckleballer.

He also signed Guerrero Jr., aka, "the best prospect ever"...so we have to give him credit there. He also did some interesting moves to acquire type B free agents, just to gain draft picks, which was a rather ingenious way to hoard draft picks, before MLB changed the rules. I think AA doesn't get enough credit around here, although trading Thor was terrible; even at the time of the trade I didn't like it. I think the jury needs to be out on Atkins. He hasn't had time to establish his legacy, although I do think he's on the right track. I really wish the Jays would pony up for Harper, though. This seems to be the perfect time to grab a FA like that (assuming he would come here, of course). It would be good for the Jays to use the financial muscle they have along with their drafting/scouting skills. Still, I'd give him at least 2 more years to see how the draft picks that he picked start turning out and how he trades/signs players who are not just considered filler, but core members of what he believes to be a contending team.

Jays should wait until they are on the cusp of contending, and have a firmer understanding of what the needs are to be a WS contender.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Jim is the new GP, he's too old... trade him for spects. So sign Harper for 10 yrs / $300M? 1st two contract years, Jays are unlikely to be contenders. Last 3 contract years, Harper is 33-36, who knows what he will be then. Not a good value sign, Jays have to outbid other teams that are further up in the competitive cycle. Plus taking a risk of significant injury to Harper while still building a contender = disaster. 2020 off season is the time to spend on FA, after Vlad/Bo are in TO, and Pearson/Pardinho are close I have no plm signing high priced FA vets when the time is right. Jays did it through the late 80's, early 90's when they were annual contenders.
