That was also the same time AA basically got rid of every catcher on the 40 man roster to hand the keys to JPA.

Dana Brown was here in a scouting-oriented role. He is apparently very well regarded as a scout. I hadn't heard anything about him "pushing" for MLB trades to be made.

I think we are done. Shatkins probably counting on the AAA rotation to develop this year, and Shoemaker/Richard are just veteran stopgaps to keep around just in case.

Yeah, guys like Foley, Gaviglio and Pannone are going to inevitably get starts when Shoemaker, Sanchez or Richard suck and/or get injured.

I would expect Reid-Foley to be in the rotation for the majority of the year regardless.

Yup, and there's also Paulino, Thornton, and Waguespack on the 40 man roster, Merryweather on the DL, and Zeuch not on the 40 man but likely to start in AAA.

 

Richard and Shoemaker are beards. They'll hold rotation spots for show only, and in case they need innings. I think the Jays want to get a look at their young SP this season.

Loads of pitchers still out there that can be picked up on minor league deals in the next few weeks. Includes ex-Jays like Hutchison (who actually just signed a minor league deal with the Yankees) and Liriano. Maybe even Estrada though he’ll probably try to hold out for a MLB deal.

Pompey still being on the roster is pretty surprising. I thought after the falling out with the AAA manager and not being a Sept call up that his time was up, but he’s finding a way to survive. A Pillar trade would really open up a spot for him, and 2019 is the type of year where you can afford to keep a player like him and give him a chance.

He's playing the Pan Am games qualifiers with his bro and there are reports that they are actually having fun. Completely new look for him. Should be interesting to see him in Spring if he makes it there.

Whenever I read the Martin trade thread and giving Danny Jansen a chance and how it doesn't matter if the Jays are dumping a vet with versatility in a waste year, I think that this team is not nearly as bad as everyone is saying. Then I read stuff like this and I'm reminded of why this team isn't expected to compete this year. That rotation is absurd. Does anyone outside of Stroman even crack the top 5 on any team with a shot to be in the playoffs? I'm hoping the FO isn't done with fixing this. I think I'll be only watching the Jays hit this year. I don't want to get an ulcer watching them pitch.

All of this rotation talk got me thinking about the depth we've accumulated, so I thought that it might be fun to put it on paper.

 

The AAA rotation will probably look pretty similar to this:

 

Sean Reid-Foley

Thomas Pannone

Sam Gaviglio

Trent Thornton

TJ Zeuch

 

Jacob Waguespack?

Jon Harris?

 

Julian Merryweather will be in this rotation when healthy, before eventually coming to Toronto. Andrew Sopko, Hector Perez, Patrick Murphy, and Nate Pearson can't be too far behind. Move a couple of Harris, Zeuch, Pannone, or Waguespack to the 'pen to maximize their skills and that should be a pretty good pitching staff full of MLB-ready depth. There are also org types, like Shawn Morimando, Justin Dillon, Zach Logue, that could pitch in the majors in a pinch, but hopefully, that doesn't ever come to fruition with the insane amount of serviceable depth the Jays have.

 

I can't ever remember this organization having so many viable starters in the upper minors. The AAA rotation is usually filled with cast-offs and career minor leaguers, so it's going to be really interesting to see which pitchers from this group - if any - emerge as legit MLB pieces. It's probably not unreasonable to assume that at least a couple of them could stick in the MLB rotation long-term; a couple more settle in as back-end/depth arms (#5-7 types); a few more make the majors in varying bullpen roles; some get a cup of coffee but are destined to pitch out almost the entirety of their careers in the minors; and the rest never get a sniff of the majors.

 

While none of these pitchers project to be aces (except for possibly Nate Pearson, though that's still highly unlikely), it seems probable that the Jays have rotation spots 3 through, like, 15, on lock. So if and when the wheat separates from the chaff and the team's competitive window opens - possibly as early as 2020 - it will be interesting to see whether or not this front office acquires an ace or two. And it'll be even more interesting to see who it will be.

He would probably never play here, but man a 10-year deal for Harper would be so sweet and actually fit the Blue Jays plans to be competitive after 2019. He and Vlad would make a great 1-2 (or 2-1) punch. Make it happen, Atkins.
