He's an extreme groundball pitcher lol, he could have a 20% HR/FB ratio and he still wouldn't be close to being among the league worst.

Okay, I can capitulate on that. He might not lead the league, but he gave up 1.1 HR per 9 the last 2 years pitching at Petco. He's now going into his age 35 season pitching at Rogers in the American league. There's no pitcher in the AL. I don't think his HR/FB ratio is magically reverting back to league average. He's a s***** pitcher. He has zero upside. He will eat innings. We aren't competing next year so it is what it is. Anyone who tries to convince me we can flip him at the deadline for anything of any significance just makes me laugh. Feel free to bring up this thread and laugh at me if that actually happens. I would love to be wrong.

He's a more than a year older than Tulo. He's moving from San Diego to Rogers Centre. He's going to lead the league in homers given up if he pitches more than 180 innings.

At least pretend like you know what you're talking about.

I wouldn't say zero upside. He's a cheap vet who could very plausibly post an ERA slightly under 4 with some good babip luck. That could return a McKinney or Teoscar type player at the deadline imo.

IMO that is extremely unlikely.

In 2018, Petco was more HR friendly than:

Fenway Park

Chase Field

Guaranteed Rate® Field

and very slightly behind Wrigley and Minute Maid. Some of you people act like home runs just don't get hit there.

You wouldn't, but literally everyone else on earth would. You think half a year of Clayton Richard will return anything of value? Why? Why does a full year of his services cost an org guy, but half a year will cost an actual prospect? Please, take me down this rabbit hole.

Because teams at the deadline get more desperate for help, especially when injuries kick in and they're pushing up against whatever internal salary caps they have in place. Obviously this would also only happen if he pitches well in the first half, both in terms of advanced stats and actual results. Last year the advanced stats suggest he's a viable 5th starter. The actual results weren't quite as kind, and likely pushed his value down (granted front offices are getting better in that regard). Richard is (probably) better than Liriano when we traded him, albeit with less potential upside, and definitely cheaper.

Richard probably out WARs Shoemaker next year.

I'll guess he doesn't even out WAR a Shoe Maker. Jimmy Choo vs. Clayton Richard you give me 40 to 1 odds

I'll take Daniel Day Lewis.

...he's a shoe cobbler for those that don't know.

When Estrada came here didn't he have a great groundball rate and huge home run given up rate. Lightning in a bottle 2.0?

Asking for Richard to breakout or turn into the something at the deadline is very wishful thinking.

This is an innings eater for 2019 and nothing more, even in the 80th percentile outcome.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

Is that likely?

Shoemaker is our best bet at finding lightning in a bottle...Richard is what he is - and it's not sexy.
