Laika Community Moderator Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 how much of the 38 mil do you think it would take to get tulo to just walk away? No idea. Sounds like we might find out though. I guess the question is - how much would a team commit to Tulo right now if he was a free agent? The answer is probably a very small number.

Very hard to see more than a 1-2M commitment. Is there any precedent for a buyout that wouldn't be for like 37M of the 38M he's owed, with maybe some kind of deferment?

A sure fire hall of fame talent who probably doesn't get in. Though still better than Harold Baines.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Amazing really haw far Tulo has fallen, sooner he is gone the better for the Jays at this point.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Why would he agree to a buy out, unless equal to amount owed? Why would the Players's union allow this, even if Tulo agreed? Imagine the precedent!? It could nullify all injured players guaranteed money or veterans or FA back-loaded contracts if they are not performing.. I just do not see the Union nor agents allowing this. Imagine an agent received a 6% commission on a $150,000,000.00 USD deal. He probably already spent that money. 4 yrs later the player says, ok, give me just $125,000,000.00 and I will walk. Does the agent have to give back the difference..? I don't see this being a Tulo decision in a vacuum, the agents, and Players Union will have their say..
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Tulo has been dealing with this injury as well as others for the last few years. Even dealing with these issues he put up a 3 win season in 2016. He's always been an above average defender, despite the issues he likely was dealing with while on the field. Now how is Tulo feeling health wise at this moment in time? I have no idea. Everyone knows that the guy has had injury problems and the risks that are associated with him. Atkins could have used more ambiguous language. Pissing off your highest paid player, who should be providing leadership for a young group of guys, is a terrible way of going about things. lol....yeah everyone is scared of Tulo being angry might destroy the chances of the Jays winning...oh wait. Ridiculous post, Tulo's own "I'll go home" comments were pathetic, he should have said i'll help the team anyway I can.

He may not be able to recoup the difference entirely, but if it's a matter of him actually getting a chance to latch on with a team and finish his career with dignity vs. being passed through waivers easily and languishing in AAA, I think he'll take a bit of a haircut to move on.

Can't veterans refuse an outright assignment, even if they clear waivers?
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 True, he could elect Free Agency: Per Article XIX-A of the CBA, any player on an MLB 40-man roster who has accrued at least five years of MLB Service Time (as well as an international player with Article XIX-A contractual rights) has the right to refuse an Outright Assignment to the minors, or the player can elect to be a free-agent immediately upon being outrighted. I’m assuming he would then receive his full contract. I guess the only recourse for the Jays is to dick him around and bench him and/or declare him medically unfit to play.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 He would just have to claim that the injuries forced the retirement and get fully paid out. The only player I can remember walking away while owed big money was Gil Meche.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 If that happens, would the jays be on the hook? or insurance covers it I understand that MLB contracts are insured in 3 year stretches and I've heard the Jays don't take insurance so even if he negotiated it with Colorado he likely isn't insured anymore. Insurance on contracts for players over 30 is around 15% of their salary in annual dues...so I would say that very few contracts these days are insured. Also insurance doesn't cover existing injuries. With Tulo that could be everything. Jays are likely on the hook for Tulo regardless.

Yeah he did say the Jays would take the bulk of it, there's no video of it on their site, assumed it was worthy of that.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Wonder how the buyout will be paid off? The entire amount applied to the 2019 player budget would leave Martin as the only significant commitment after next season, with Hicks (29), Arenado (29), Wacha (30) among the potential free agents.

Racial slurs have no place here. This is why POC are afraid of everyone all the time, white men just can't help but demean and dehumanize them. I hope you lose your job and end up homeless and destitute.
