Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 Just watched part of the press conference via FB. Seems like a good guy, with a personality and who is funny, who will speak like a normal person and not some canned corporate speak like the robot Shapiro. My biggest take away is that he is a winner, and winning is the priority. That is IMO the most important thing I want from a leadership perspective. Of course everyone says they want to win. However, some guys are able to populate the correct winning mentality in the team better then others and successfully make it a pillar of everything else they do. I like so far... Is winning ever NOT a priority? I bet you're going to hate him by...June.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 If we can figure out the new screen name by June. That's where you come in You know, this really got me thinking...I remember in Spring, the Red Sox said that their goal was to win the WS. Lo and behold, they did it! Maybe Carlos Danger has a point, sometimes all it takes is saying you want to win really, really bad.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Before I go to bed, I am going to leave you all with some very important words that I think relate to our new manager and this topic. You dont marry the prettiest girl at the party. You marry the one whose yelling at the beer pong table because she is losing. That girl is going to raise winners & you want your kids to be winners.

So I'm going to pass on getting shut down by the prettiest girl there and head straight for the angry and uncoordinated section, got it.

Why would you marry a loser?
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 So I'm going to pass on getting shut down by the prettiest girl there and head straight for the angry and uncoordinated section, got it. Only if you want your kids to be winners. Remember, attractive people will have a failure of a kid 100% of the time. They never amount to anything. Good parents teach their kids beer pong and shotgunning bud lights by the time they can talk.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Why would you marry a loser? Wait, the trick is to marry someone who loses all the time but doesn't enjoy it? That's it, I'm proposing to Buck Showalter.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Just saw the PC. Montoyo seems like a really likable, humble guy. Glad he has gotten an opportunity.

KevinGregg Verified Member Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 Sorry if already posted or not in the best section The opener is brilliant and I could see it becoming the new norm for games with a non-elite "starter". It's an excellent way to get more of the matchups you want. Your innings eating #3-#4 starter gets to pitch basically the same number of innings, but faces batters from the bottom of the order more often. The first inning is actually very high scoring and shouldn't be treated as low leverage garbage time, so it makes sense to actually start out with a good reliever compared to a more mediocre pitcher who has the ability to pitch a lot of innings but not necessarily the stuff to get critical outs whenever needed. Also, the first inning is the only time a manager gets to plan exactly the hitters he wants to send to the plate - the opener is a way for the opposing manager to sort of counter this by having the best pitching matchup possible.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 I could be convinced of the whole opener thing. Would be interesting to go over the benefits.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 The benefits of the Opener are so patently obvious that it is basically ORGANIZATIONAL NEGLIGENCE to not use the strategy, unless you happen to be overflowing with rotational riches.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 I get that the opener makes sense. But I don't like it. Mostly as a matter of convenience/tradition. I like being able to scan pitching matchups for the next few games to see what games interest me. I really hope it doesn't become the norm to see a bunch of Ryan Tepera vs. Matt Albers pitching matchups when I look at the probable starters.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 When do teams have to release their starting pitchers and lineups? Could we soon see team counter the opener by moving platoon guy up to the top of the order or say move their 2nd best hitter from the 1st or 2nd spot, down to the 4th spot to avoid the opener?

Well in theory openers are only used when the normal starter would be a back of the rotation guy like Gaviglio. It’s only if they begin to be used in games aces are scheduled to start in that it may mess up your decisions on which games to pay attention to.

It’s only if they begin to be used in games aces are scheduled to start in that it may mess up your decisions on which games to pay attention to. I hope it stays that way. I don't mind the opener when you're starting a Gaviglio or Jason Vargas or something, but I hope it doesn't progress to the point where 50% (or more) of games are started by an opener, and essentially bullpen games. I don't really think it's ideal for baseball to have aces, and then a bunch of 2-3 inning guys.

Outfits could list Probable Openers and Probable Longmen. Ryan Yarbrough pitched 147.1 innings this year with an ERA under 4.00 and he only made 6 starts. He also won like 16 f***ing games because the tactic works and the team won. That's way better entertainment than watching Sam Gaviglio get his s*** absolutely shoved up and out of his nostrils every 5th day while the team goes like 5 and 20 in his starts.

This is what I was thinking as well. Opposing team just shuffles their batting order in response.

The risk is they take at bats away from their best hitters - so I doubt we'll see too much of it besides moving some platoon splits around.
