One of the things that really bothers me and has bothered me for quite some time, was the 2015 team. I wasn't here, but at the time I remember thinking about how important home field advantage would have been in the ALCS. If you recall we finished 2 games behind the Royals in the final standings, however we owned the tie breaker against them.

Out of the final 5 games, we lost 4. The game right after clinching the division, and then another loss to Baltimore, followed by 2 out of 3 to Tampa. How did the Royals finish the year? They finished it by winning 5 in a row. They had also clinched but they didn't pull the parachute. They knew how important home field advantage was. When we clinched, we were ahead of the Royals. Thats right. we had the best record in the AL.

I hold Gibby responsible, because the job was not done. In the end that is a different ALCS against the Royals, if we are at home. I am not just talking about the Hick Stolen homerun, or the Goins pop fly drop, the ridiculous calls on Revere but all of it. A true leader would have held off any celebrations until the job is done

And that is Why Gibby might have cost us a World Series birth. We were the best team in the Majors that year and we didn't win. We didn't even make it to the WS. Give him all the credit you want for 2016 because that was a season where he got the job done, but we were never going to beat Cleveland (Partially we didn't even have a f***ing plan against Kluber and Miller.)

But for 2015 it wasn't right.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the game right after we clinched, we sent a AAA team out there.

You utter fool.

FWIW Giles seems to really like it here, let's hope it continues and contributes to rebuilding his value.

If Giles and Stroman are having bounce back years in 2019, and the Jays are not in contention, then the trade deadline will be extremely important for the Jays. Could add some key pieces. I'd include Sanchez in there if I had any faith in him, but it's dwindling.

I particularly liked this...

“I come here, they had their arms open to me. They asked me what I wanted to do. And then (manager John Gibbons) saying, you’re the closer, that’s what you were born to do, you’re the man. I said, I’m not going to let you down.”

There was an immediate simpatico with pitching coach Pete Walker as well. Together they fixed the slider that had gone errant, restored its snap with a small mechanical adjustment.

“I knew the things I had to work on,” Giles explains. “I know myself. I’m a really good pitcher, good profile pitcher. If something’s wrong, I know how to fix it. It’s my body.’’

This, he implies, hadn’t happened in Houston and the relationship went downhill from there.

“When I came here, they stayed patient with me. I said, hey, I want to work on this thing till I’m comfortable. All right. OK, I’m comfortable, let’s move on to this next thing. Pitching, you can’t just try to fix everything at once.

“For me, I had to take baby steps to get my groove back. The Jays allowed me to do that. Yeah, the team was out of contention, but it doesn’t matter. It’s still my career. I still have to prove myself. Them being so patient with me, understanding what I want to do, was very, very big.’’

He means, specifically, that management didn’t freak out as his fastball velocity dipped while he was working out those issues. “Eventually, when your body gets comfortable, it’s going to spike back up, which it’s done. My control has been better. My slider’s better. My velo’s back.’’

So is Martin a possibility based on recent announcements?

What announcements would make Martin a possibility to manage next year?

If there is anything that I know from the Kawhi Leonard trade, is that OddsShark is always right.

Meh. Sure it's not an optimal choice, but its the GM who should be feeding the manager with decent players. If you don't want your manager to make bad choices, don't put bad choices on the 40 man roster.

Did Vegas predict Nick Nurse too?

Don’t know much about Wedge but I kinda like John Schneider

I had stupidly posted that in the wrong thread by accident, but it turns out it's still applicable here anyways as Spanky pointed out the awesomeness of Gibby.

Why not Martin? He would have to be better than half of the managers the jays have hired and fired in the last 40 years.

He knows the team.

He is already under contract.

He is young enough to relate to the new kids.

Plus it would keep him off the field.

Well I guess there's the tiny part about Martin probably not wanting to retire

Also the whole "paying a manager $20,000,000/year" thing...

Martin got practically all of Sept off. I'd be surprised if he's even on the team next year. He's not managing next year. Maybe someday in the future.

Pillar leading off. Russ is dumn

Might be his last game as a Jay, so... Why not?

f*** I hope so. Don't need his misplaced conceit around young players

I hope so more 'cause I think he's got a bit of trade value still and there's no need to have him on the team next year. I think between Alford and Grichuk we'll be fine in CF defensively, and it's not like Pillar brings anything with the bat.

You don't think that there's a reasonable chance that Pillar is gone this off season?

Ohhh thought you were referring to Martin

Paul Molitor is now available. I don't know anything about his managing, I'm assuming he's old school. He was a Jay, so there's that.

Yeah, I have no idea whether he'd be a good hire or not. The casuals would almost certainly love it though, and that helps put butts in the seats.

My ideal qualifications for the next manager would be:

- former major league catcher

- willing to implement any modern analytic strategies suggested by the front office

So... maybe John Gibbons?
