Laika Community Moderator Posted January 7, 2019 Posted January 7, 2019 I am honestly interested to know how they plan to put a rotation in place when they are looking to move into competitiveness in a year or two. Collect depth obsessively, wait for the cream to rise, then sign a couple of cherries. Toronto is not going to be as s***** as people think in 2019. They could reasonably finish .500 and be looking at 2020 offseason decisions like - do we keep Stroman in his last year of control and break camp with Bo on the roster? Do we make Aaron Sanchez an RP for 2020 to maximize that team's projected wins?

I love the depth, but its hard to imagine that we are going to fill out the top of our rotation (the 1-2 spots) with any of these guys unless Pearson can finally stay healthy and we get really lucky with someone else.

They'll almost certainly have to sign or trade for an arm or two to truly compete.

Next two years try out practically all the young pitching currently in AA/AAA, and trade prospect depth for vetrins. The Jays are going to get to a point where they have too many prospects, and consolidating them for vets will become more sensible.
Todd Verified Member Posted January 7, 2019 Posted January 7, 2019 That would be a mistake. But that's everybody first response trade prospects. Every team should always have a strong prospect pool at all times. Just in case of injuries. And to always have strong teams in the future

This is the trouble I have with this team. Who are the horses in the rotation in 2021? Maybe this is where they want to spend their free agent dollars. I just don't see enough high end pitching prospects to see a quality rotation in a two or three years.

Plus most of the free agent money will be spent on pitching (we’re going to have lots of payroll space).

The 2015 Astros had a rotation of Keuchel, McCullers, Feldman, McHugh, and Mike Fiers. Fast forward to 2019, they had Verlander, Keuchel, Cole, Morton and McCullers. Basically all the playoff teams had the strengths of their rotations built mainly through trades/free agency instead of home grown starters. Realistically, we only need 1-2 pitching prospects to become viable starters with the rest coming through trades/free agency. Also of note, we have the 3rd lowest salary commitments for 2020 in all of baseball with only $16M. Lower than the Rays, Pirates, A's, Marlins, and Royals. Tons of money to be spent.

A good number of the top pitchers in the game never sniffed a top 100 list. See Laika's cherry post above.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 A disappointing winter for the blue jays again. Team has still not addressed the teams weakest. Starting Pitching, bullpen, team speed nothing. And it can not decide if they want to go young all around or be one of the oldest teams in baseball. My opinion go young and let them grow as a team. It's been done before. REBUILDING.....How does it work?
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 People don't give Danny Jansen enough respect. Timeline talk always centres around "Vlad & Bo" but Jansen is a better prospect/asset than Bo. It's Vlad & Danny & Bo. & Lourdes, of course.

I think most of those guys are long shots to move and it's not like we have anyone who could take over full time for any of them except Martin who won't play everyday. I think they did a pretty good job a collecting a s*** ton of pitching depth(more than we've ever had). There might not be any 1-2 guys here but there are a bunch of serviceable arms that they can just throw out there and see who sticks.

Do not think any one here thought we would eat Tulo like money either! Trading pillar I would like and losing morales Would be a Dream adding to the offseason Requires low returns but should be done Still. several teams need them no need to be Greedy about it ! A low minor league player Or international cap money ! Heck pillar at 50 and morales at 80-90 off As to be Desirable to someone out here here at reduced prices ! Then Package make two pitching packages And Deal them as a package and discount them by 50 off for one top 30 or two low minors ... Ie Starter, Stroman, Fringe Strater/longman Biagini , Bullpen Giles Would that not be enough to get something like that ???

Grichuk/Alford could take over for Pillar and likely put up numbers as good or better. We don't need someone to take over for Morales, just rotate guys through DH for 2019. You could probably run with Tellez if you got a really good return on Smoak, but you're right there, he's not going to be nearly as good.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Yeah Jays needed to open a 40 man roster spot for Phelps and trading Martin did it. Pompey saved for now.

Plus Biaginni and Barnes in the pen. We still have time though.. Those guys will drag us down.. Travis’s D is going to cost us, doubt he hits enough to make up for it. Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2019 Posted January 12, 2019 There's about to be a whole lot of money off the books after this season, with Vlad, Bo, Jansen, and Biggio about to make the jump to the major leagues. Past them, there's an absurd amount of talent coming down the minor league pipes in the subsequent seasons. With so much money to utilize after 2019, this front office will be free to spend money to fill out the roster as the cream of the team rises to the top. Operation Perpetual Competitive Window is about to begin. We're also in a fantastic position to take on a one or two year bad contract at the deadline if a potential luxury tax team gets desperate.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2019 Posted January 12, 2019 Alex A once said that buyouts count against current payroll, not future. I remember an example where Rajai Davis had a $3m option or $500k buyout after 2012. AA bought him out for $500k, then signed him for $2.5M in 2013. The logic was he got $3M anyway, but the $500k buyout counted against 2012 payroll. So basically AA saved $500k for 2013 by doing that. Are we sure the buyouts for Garcia, Solarte, etc, count for 2019? Not that it makes much of a difference, but now I'm curious how it works.
