BTS Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2018 Author Posted November 21, 2018 I’m pleased that they didn’t protect Romano
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 Solarte's still on the 40 man... they must have decent interest in trade. I figured they were going to trade him by yesterday or DFA'd. Hmmm...
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 I’m pleased that they didn’t protect Romano Forrest Wall makes me nervous, hence my post about Solarte. He's not ready yet, but you never know.
KevinGregg Verified Member Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 Does Jon Harris get taken in the rule 5? I recall he at least used to be kinda highly rated

Yeah I don’t get it either. I thought for sure Solarte would be cut by now. Maybe they’re trying to bring him back for less than he’d get in arb.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 I think we are gonna lose Travis Bergen in this draft. Bergen, McClelland(100+) and Romano would be my guess, maybe Copping too.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 I’m pleased that they didn’t protect Romano I think they are going to regret it. I was going to come on here and discuss, however, not sure if the site was down or just me, but couldn't get on. This occured right as the Jays announced the 40 man also..😕 I really don't get the hate on Romano. Do we really think we can get something better then Romano for Solarte???

The Jays must think they'll get a better return, it's self explanatory.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2018 Author Posted November 21, 2018 Looking at the current 40-man, and I know we have a lack of high end talent on the 25-man right now, but does anyone remember ever having more depth on the 40-man? There are still some black holes that will hopefully be removed once the team makes additions this offseason (Urena, Davis and Leiter Jr. probably being the three biggest wastes of space), but there's depth beyond the 25-man here. Assuming they add 1 or two legit starters in the offseason, we're looking at guys like Paulino, SRF, Merryweather, Murphy, Perez, and Thornton as depth starters. It's been a long time since spots 25-40 on the 40-man have been this young and had this much potential to be contributing major league players over the medium term.

I was thinking that the other day updating the payroll spreadsheet I have. We actually have legitimate major league options for every single position beyond the 25 man and even some not on the 40 man that are close to contributing. Sure beats the AA days of 5 star names surrounded by garbage where only 20 belong in the majors.

Yeah, we're close to being one of those orgs that pumps out more talent than they can use and ends up having to move MLB-ready players before the Rule V. They're assembling the foundation of a long-term competitor right now, and they're not getting enough credit for what's been accomplished.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 Yeah it's getting to the point where we can actually start writing projected A+/AA/AAA lineups and rotations well in advance because there are so many prospects in the system. Shatkins has barely traded any prospects since they took over and have added a lot of them.

(?) JPA and a bunch of others. We were all pretty optimistic about the future. Granted, we never had a prospect like Vlad...

What about Ramon Ortiz 4 or 5 years ago? That was brutal!!

The year a broken down Ricky Romero, Chad Jenkins, Aaron Laffey, Chien-Ming Wang, Ramon Ortiz, Todd Redmond, Sean Nolin, and Esmil Rogers started a combined 51 games.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2018 Posted November 22, 2018 Is there a limit an organization can lose? I thought there was. No, not that I'm aware of, they're unprotected and eligible to be drafted. Players that get drafted have to stay on the MLB 25 man roster, or sent back to the original team if it doesn't work out as long as they aren't claimed on waivers from another team, same rules apply. Edit: Here's a link... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_5_draft
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 22, 2018 Posted November 22, 2018 Bergen, McClelland(100+) and Romano would be my guess, maybe Copping too. Some interesting names being left unprotected. Hmmm.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted November 22, 2018 Posted November 22, 2018 if the Jays are that concerned about losing players to the rule V they could have just DFA Tulo, Martin and Morales. No one is going to pick up those guys on waivers and be responsible for the rest of their contracts. Put them on the AAA roster The downside to this is that when you activate the players and put them back on the 40 man, you expose the same young guys but now you do not have the rule V apply and the young guys can be picked up and stashed in another organization's minor league system Obviously out of the box, and I'm missing something - there must be reason its not done. But i think back to how EE was dfa'd and put in the minors. He passed through waivers and had time to regain his swing - don't think that would happen w Tulo - but maybe it would push him to retire?

Tulo would refuse the assignment and we would have to release him along with all of his salary.
