Which is all the more reason to have kept him and offered him the QO. He wasn't going to accept it and we would have got a pick out of it instead of nothing. We got nothing so Shatkins could help out their buddies. It's really rather pathetic.

You don't even know what the return is.

The fact that anyone believes this trade was Shatkins “helping out their buddies” is insanity. Any possibility that Cleveland offered the best deal out of all the teams or is that unrealistic?

Sorry, Shakins have been secret agents the entire time. This was their big mission from the start.

I believe they can. I think the team receiving the player has 6 months to decide who it is.

If so, the return seems very likely to be a 40-man guy. Some potential names: Eric Haase, Cody Anderson, Yu Chang

There's suggestions that the return will depend on Donaldson's health, and will be decided by Jan 30th. Not sure if the former is permitted or not, but the date for the latter seems reasonable.

Interesting. If it's conditional based on health, they didn't necessarily make it a PTBNL because it's a 40-man guy. Could be anyone in the org in that case.

How can you even quantify the return based on that, and who gets to decide?

Is there precedent for this? Pretty bizarre imo.

It think the PTBNL will be some org guy because Shatkins are just giving our team away to their buddies in Cleveland.

IF it's permitted, which I have doubts about, I'd assume you'd say it'll be x player if Donaldson plays x number of games, y player if he plays y number of games, etc.

2016 scouting report from BA.

A senior sign for $20,000 out of NAIA Oklahoma Baptist in 2014, Merryweather first drew attention in intrasquad games in spring training with pitches that had Indians teammates muttering the word "nasty." The 24-year-old commands an interesting three-pitch mix. His fastball ranges 92-95 mph with a good changeup that is about 15 mph slower and an average breaking ball. An athletic pitcher who holds runners well, he does a good job repeating his over-the-top delivery.

It should be noted that a number of non-40 man players are included in August trades, most recently in the Verlander deal.

I don't see any reason why it is more likely to be a 40-man player. I think there are multiple possibilities conditional on JD's performance and that's why it is a PTBNL.

This isn't a great post. If they had to force him on the field it doesn't mean he was faking an injury, it could mean he was genuinely sore and the Jays were pushing him to play so they could still get something for him.

Faking an injury is obscenely stupid for someone in Donaldson's position. Not only did it f*** up his free agency value, a trade allows him to play in the postseason and potentially regain some value, and it also helps him ditch his QO. There was literally no good reason for Donaldson to hinder the chances of him being traded. I can't see a professional athlete shooting themselves in the foot that many times just to be petty, certainly not when there are agents and family involved.

Likely I'm wrong about faking the injury. Just seems insane that he's pissed at the org, has so much money on the line and can only make it back exactly on the day that will allow him to get moved. I'm not wrong about this not being first front office he has clashed with though.

I smell conspiracy. No way could he have changed it that fast. Shapiro, Donaldson and the Indians have been working on this for weeks. TheHurl too so he hits on his $20 bet.

I'd prefer to hit my A's bet though.

I don't see anything on SI to bet.

Neither do I. The ARI - LA game could be interesting though, considering the train wreck Kenley has been the last few games and the fact he's facing the heart of the order (assuming he comes in).

Usually in a PTBNL situation, the two orgs will agree to a certain number of players in varying tiers based on whatever criteria they've agreed upon, which in this case is apparantly health. Then when the time comes, the Jays will get to pick from the 2 or 3 names that they already agreed to from in that tier.

What if the ptbnl is conditional based on health/games played but he gets hurt for a different non calf reason? Just seems really convoluted.

The 40 man roster player theory might be more logical.

Woops. How does this get 59 likes? They aren't even the worst managed team in their division. and The Browns have won like 2 games in the past 3 NFL seasons.

Like, 28 current NHL front offices are absolutely terrible.

Lol @ former NL MVP. Bowden what are you doing bro

I knew it might happen today but I wasn’t emotionally ready to watch Josh Donaldson leave : (

Holy Christmas! Nobody knows what we get till we get the PTBNL! It might be a pleb, it might be a star (doubt it). But, seriously, all we know is we got JD for something.

Anbody know if a player on the 40 who didn't pass through waivers can be included here as a PTBNL after the season?

Some interesting clarification on August waiver claims:

PTBNL - if completed after the season the waiver process no longer applies.

PTBNL - 6 months allowed to complete.

There’s a $20,000 fee to claim.

A team has to have space on the 40 man roster.

PTBNL to “have value”? Really hope Lindor was informed of this deal or he could be some PO’d when he finds out his 2019 home games will be at the Rogers Centre.
