Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Not calling anyone out, I used to believe this too up until a couple of months ago. Just wanted to put it out there so we all know and are on the same page.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 This is good to know. I thought when the AAA season was over, they were "free" call ups. Like someone said, Vlad getting a little injury now actually might work out better for the org. If he finishes the season in AAA, and begins next season in AAA, ONE FULL YEAR MORE! That is awesome. Now if only Estrada and JD can get f***ing healthy so we can trade them for something other than a bucket of balls...

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 I guess it makes more sense that all MLB service time is counted as such.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Cross posting from the other thread... it seems like a lot of the other old school guys also thought September service time didn't count. It's because we remember, Delgado and Green and Manny Ramirez, and Wells, and Snider and others coming up in September. Guys like that came up all the time. Was it possible to get 6 years and 90% of a seventh year in the old days?? Maybe that's what's changed somewhow. Point is Why did teams used to call up young top prospects in September?? And now it's apparently stupid??

Keeping them down throughout september and 2 weeks of april only buys you another year if they literally never go to the minors again. That probably doesn't happen too often, and even when it does their idea might have been that a few ABs in september would speed up the player's development enough that the increase in their production next year would be worth losing the extra year. Of course with the rise of actual statistical analysis this idea was probably recently debunked

Of course with the rise of actual statistical analysis this idea was probably recently debunked Well, to be honest, no player is fully developed in the minors. The final stage of development is always done at the big league level. September call-ups were/are so popular with prospects because for the most part, the playoff picture is pretty much secured and so many of the kids being called up are being put into situations with 0 pressure on non-playoffs teams. Another thing that also impacts September callups is the player's contract status. Are they on the 40 man roster already? Do they need to be added to protect from Rule 5 in the offseason anyway so why not just bring em up early and give them a taste? Do they just need some extra arms and don't care if they have to DFA them in the offseason? I think it's pretty rare that a September call-up for a non-playoff team would be a guy that isn't on the 40 man, doesn't need to be added to the 40 man in the offseason and is a top level prospect. Vlad would fall into that category and I honestly doubt we see him this year at all. Different story if a team is in the playoff hunt, it's past the non-waiver deadline and you get hit with an injury that you need to fill with your best option.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 September call-ups just free the club from 25 man roster constrictions. Vlad could still get a call-up for a couple weeks, then we just suppress him a bit extra next year to get the extra year of control. Not a big deal. I'd rather see him in September than not, especially if he thrashes AAA. So you start him in AAA next year anyway and keep him down til May, that's the way she goes.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 They count but don't forget...service time isn't the only factor when considering call ups

Which is useless when you think about it. It's all about a taste, money, and service time. This day in age it's pretty huge, until the next CBA/Lockout/Strike.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Josh Donaldson will be playing 3B for the Toronto Blue Jays in August and September not Vlad Guerrero Jr.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Corrected. Probably to be honest. But Donaldson isn't getting traded at this point. Hes getting qualified which is pretty depressing to say but maybe he will accept and have a huge 2019.

I bet he hopes to be traded, not just for the fact that he might go to a contender, but then he can't be qualified and wont have that hanging over his FA efforts.

The QO isn't bad as before, it'd be a late 100 quarter pick, as I've said passes on the QO and signs with us at same money or a million more, from last arb.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 12, 2018 Posted July 12, 2018 A year in baseball equals 171 days although as season is about 184 days. You cannot reach free agency until you have 6 full seasons in the majors (or on IR). A team's ultimate goal for their stars in 5.171. That is the easiest thing to remember. The blue jays could call him up for September and then keep him down down for 55ish days next year and it would have the same effect. That seems stupid but just providing an example. My guess is that they will send him back down to New Hampshire for the playoffs, and say this is more important for his development), assuming Buffalo doesn't make it.
