Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 He can't possibly keep this up, his numbers are completely unsustainable, but... If he can build off of this early success to have a great season? I'm on team Maile 100%. Most of the annual blue collar fan favourites aren't good at baseball. (see Goins, Ryan; Kawasaki, Muninori; MacDonald, John) Personally - I too enjoy watching fringe players contribute at the ML level....even if it's a short term thing, fueled by the BABIP & baseball gods. I mean these guys have worked their asses off for so long, typically squeezing every ounce of talent out of their talent deficient bodies. It's nice to see them be rewarded from time to time.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 The great thing about this 2018 lineup is the variety of ways in which the manage to win......the long ball, station to station, great pitching and defense...you just don't know how they will pull it off on any given night. What a difference from 2017. and we get the dance twice in one day.... http://i.imgur.com/YW5cUOU.gif
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 "Hey Luke, what does it mean to you that John Gibbons didn't pinch hit for you even though you suck?" "What is it about this team that they are never out of a game?" Great questions, Hazel. You have a really important job. I wish players would start dumping Gatorade directly on the interviewer. Would make these painful questions much more interesting.

I'm hoping that he's turned a corner and is actually able to contribute... If he becomes the next workmanlike guy, I'm not interested... And he can go down when we're ready to call up McGuire or Jansen... So far this season, he has looked good. I hope he continues to look good.

It's like they expected him to say "yeah I know I suck, but I'm glad Gibby showed faith in me anyway". Still better than Barry Davis, though. All Maile has to do is be replacement level. If he can do that, then it's like a one win improvement over the team's back ups the last two years.

guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 Just came home, my goodness were those were some fantastic games!! Sat right behind the Jays bullpen in left field. The Jon Jay heckles were f***ing amazing, we got a reaction out of him at least 5 times. He was a really good sport though, I think he heard "Long day, Jon Jay" at least 100 times. NEVER in my life have I been more relieved to see Ryan Goins batting than today. Every time it seemed the Royals were gonna rally I had hope seeing Ryan's name coming up in the order. Kinda like how a NL fan doesn't mind an opposing team stringing together a couple of hits if the pitcher is coming up. He finished 0-4 with 2Ks, the other 2 outs being fielded by the pitcher. On the lighter side he got a nice standing O and when it's all said and done I'm glad he was a Blue Jay. He was pretty fun to watch in 2015, the walk off vs the Indians was probably my favourite moment of his. See you @ the next Jays doubleheader in 2034 when the dome needs to be fixed from godzilla damage.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 This fanbase boos Alex Rios after several years of great play and gives a standing ovation to Ryan Goins, who has always been terrible.

When Maile was hurt last year, our catching abilities were pathetic.

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 Maile was always a fine defensive catcher and then whatever you got out of him with the bat was bonus.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 Maile was pathetic last year too - his hot start has come out of nowhere. Last year, apparently Maile was hurt when he came to the Jays. He had superb defensive skills, but his bat was poor. After he came back from surgery and started to get some regular at bats, he actually started to hit then. Not like this year obviously, but quite reasonable for a backup catcher.
