Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Pat Tabler proves that you can have terrible hair, no talent and be incredibly repetative and make it on TV. fify
AledmysDiaz Verified Member Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Its hard to see Bautista as a coach either, he didn't seem all that personable. I would really like to see him announce his retirement, and call it a career.

I would really like to see him announce his retirement, and call it a career. I doubt he retires, too much talk from his camp about playing next year. Someone will end up giving him a (likely incentive laden) contract, Tampa seems like a perfect fit. They could get some cheap production if he rebounds at all, and if so he perhaps draws some trade interest later in the year from a contender.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Or Zaun Tabler will take Zaun's spot
Shart Verified Member Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Maybe he will be put into an ambassador type role...like Drake with the Raptors. Joey Bats just goes to Jays home games and hangs out with the fans like a mascot. I doubt he has anything better to do.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Surprised that nobody has brought this up yet. But if there is any truth to Bautista coming back, it very likely means the team has a plan to ship out Morales which most here would view as a net positive. There is no way Bautista would WANT to come back with the roster the way it is right now. I think it's fair to say that this man may not expect a starting role, but should at least be given a chance to be a backup on an MLB roster. If he's going to settle for a non-roster invitee deal, it's going to be with a team where he has a reasonable shot at making the 25-man roster. At this point Carrera, Hernandez and Alford should be ahead of him on the depth charts for the 25th spot on this roster.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 I'd 100% give Joey Bats a shot at the right price if we could ditch Morales. He's a fine candidate for a dead cat bounce. Its just a situation where you make the expectation clear that his spot isn't guaranteed and that he will basically not see the field.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Or Zaun I wonder if he'd take a hometown discount.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 If they do ship Morales out (which would be a damn miracle) then I think they'd rather just put Pearce at DH than Jose.

Why in the f*** would we dump an old, slow, a one dimensional, below average hitter and replace him with an old, slow, a one dimensional, below average hitter?
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Why in the f*** would we dump an old, slow, a one dimensional, below average hitter and replace him with an old, slow, a one dimensional, below average hitter? Plenty of reasons. Bautista can play some games at 1B and RF, shorter contract, smaller salary, he claims he has an excuse for being bad last year (vision problems), it would be a popular move with many fans, he’s never been one dimensional (a power hitter but also elite at drawing walks). We shouldn’t do it because if we somehow dumped Morales on the Royals, Pearce would still be a better option than Bautista. 50/50 Bautista is done, but a team with space for a DH can give him a cheap 1 year deal with little risk. We’re just not that team.

I mean there is reason to believe that perhaps Bautista isn't actually as terrible as he was last season. He didn't just decline his talent fell off the map.

He didn't just decline his talent fell off the map. He was worth 1.4 WAR in 2016 despite a good wRC+ of 122. 2 years later, as a DH, his upside might be 1 WAR. We already have a log jam and there's probably a better chance that Pearce bounces back than there is that Jose does. Flexibility at DH for Pearce, Grandy + a rotation of our regulars would be amazing. There's no way we'd block that to "see" if Jose could give use 1 WAR.

We had to pay a premium for that chance last season because of the 2015 he put up. I love Jose as a Jay and want him on the wall of excellence. He deserves it more than others. He is a dick sometimes but he became a star here and I was ok with him overall. We will be talking about his Game 5 bat flip and the Odor punch forever....however...time to move on from any time on the field with us. Sell booster juice and show up on Sportsnet interviews and commentary from time to time.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 I feel like Morales is a sunk cost and Bautista is a marginal upgrade on him. I won’t make a numerical argument for it but that’s my sense. I’d probably dump Morales for nothing (like, retain most of his salary to get a reliever) and sign Jose for a few million. He would have to want to play part time and move between different positions. But of all the potential moves out there it’s hard to justify doing that. Surely there are superior free agents left who wouldn’t cost very much and would be better than Jose.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 how much did Jose think he was getting paid 2 years ago? lol the big contract that never happened. both he and Edwin got greedy and started counting their money before they ever got the big deal. This year I think most fans have come to the understanding that Jose is over the hill, through the woods and eating breakfast at grannies house it was a good ride but now he's yesterdays news. Thanks for all the years but no thanks this time around
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 Nah, EE was professional throughout. Jose stopped being a douche after getting clocked by Odor. His numbers started tanking same time.
