Blue Jays to extend protective netting

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays will replace and expand the protective netting at Rogers Centre for the 2018 season.

 

The new netting will be extended to the outfield end of each dugout, the team said Monday in a release.

 

In addition, existing netting behind home plate will be replaced and increased in height by about three metres.

 

The team said the existing netting meets Major League Baseball's recommended guidelines, but the newly installed netting will exceed those standards.

 

The changes will be made in time for the Blue Jays' home opener against the New York Yankees on March 29.

 

Several teams announced plans last year to add more netting to better protect fans.

 

The Blue Jays said the new netting is designed to blend into the background and provide greater visibility.

It's definitely going to take some getting use to. But kinda knew it was coming and people really shouldn't feel in danger when they go to a Baseball game.

I agree. I used to be in the camp of "the onus is on the fan - they should be paying attention when they're at a baseball game". Now I have 3 young boys. I love taking them and they LOVE going to baseball games, but FFS, it's now nearly impossible to be paying at attention at all times. Luckily for me, now that I'm buying 4-5 tickets a game, I can't afford to sit in the danger zone anyway.

Cheap Jew math...spend a few bucks upfront for netting, save thousands in foul balls over the course of the season and every season thereafter. Probably increase concession sales of souvenir balls as well. Damn Shapiro.

Anyone who doesn't support this needs their head checked--MLB is demanding this all around the league after so many injuries in the crowds. And this netting is common in Japan in their leagues.

I know people who don't want to get games because they are afraid balls will be hit at them. Its pretty silly but legit where I sit I have seen people get f***ed up. Whether it was breaking hands trying to catch the ball or those nasty bounces that catch people in the face. If nothing else it creates peace of mind. The netting has got beter especially at hockey games where it doesn't ruin the sight lines as much as people think it does. If people are really that concerned they can sit above the netting.

When does it end?

 

A HR hit on a line in to the bleachers could be travelling 80-90 mph. If a kid dies sitting in the bleachers does the whole field get enclosed? I certainly hope not.

I believe this is more about sawed off bats flying into the stands, not baseballs. End of the dugout seems reasonable.

I think I'll be going to Detroit for my yearly Jays road trip. The viewing experience keeps getting worse and worse at the RC. I get why they had to do it, but it's unfortunate that fans don't pay attention at games.
