Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 If they get similar playing time as Goins and Barney, Diaz and Solarte could be 4 WAR improvements EACH.
Ace Verified Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 We got coverage in the middle infield for when Tulo and Travis inevitably hit the DL and it came fairly cheap so I like it
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 Olivares is a lot more intriguing than this blurb makes him out to be. There is real upside there, albeit with obvious swing/miss concerns. Ugh. If this guy is going to become an MLB talent, it will be on San Diego's PD team to do so. And good on them if they succeed. Trading an okay prospect from Lansing is not a high cost trade no matter how it is spun.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 Like this move. Not sure why it took so long for the Jays to upgrade on their middle IF depth.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 As for San Diego, they can afford to make this deal, as they still have Chase Headley, who they reacquired from the Yankees, Freddy Galvis at SS who they picked up from the Phillies, and Carlos Asauje at 2B, along with utility player Jose Pirela, who can play all over the diamond. They also have Cory Spangenberg, along with prospects Luis Urias, Allen Cordoba(who is ticketed for AA or AAA this year now that his rule 5 status is done), Javier Guerra and Fernando Tatis Jr. in the system. They could afford to make this deal.. plus they wanted to get his salary off the books long term (Headley is a free agent after 2018, and will go off San Diego's book after this coming season).
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 This is basically how we will become good. Shatkins have 0 risk tolerance. Every small move they make will only be if it's a clear win like this. We will just slowly stockpile players with surplus value. Yep. Good asset management. They won’t (can’t) rebuild so just stockpile as many assets as possible and improvise. I like that strategy, .

I think Pirela is pencilled in as their LF
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 This is a good trade. Infield depth has been improved significantly, and on the cheap this offseason. Yep. Diaz and Solarte are some very nice depth upgrades with proven upside, and the cost for both was basically just absorbing their salaries.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 This is a good trade. Infield depth has been improved significantly, and on the cheap this offseason. Depth is nice, but is everyone comfortable with our primary options? If Tulo and it Travis flame out in 2018 will the depth pieces be able to provide the type of production you need from a team that wants to contend? If they're expected to be every day players...
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 I think Pirela is pencilled in as their LF At the moment, yes. They are also getting Jankowski and Dickerson back in their OF in 2018 as well, as they're finally healthy. So Pirela might end up being a super-utility player. FYI, Jared Carkuff also is going to SD--35th round pick in 2016,
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 Woops, think I mispoke earlier. But here's the projected improvement we can count on compared to last year. In 362 PA last year, Barney was worth -0.6 WAR. In 459 PA last year, Goins was worth -0.3 WAR. In 324 PA, Steamer projects 1 WAR for Diaz. In 339 PA, Steamer projects 0.9 WAR for Solarte. So just kind of eyeballing it, we are looking at a 3 WAR improvement or so from our backup middle infielders.

BTS Community Moderator Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 Anyone know if Hernandez is out of options in 2018? Roster resource isn't working for me.

I don't expect the team to be very god anyway. I think they're doing all they can do given the circumstances: support Tulo and Travis with legitimate MLB players who will be above replacement level if/when they are needed, and doing it without mortgaging the future.

For a team that seemingly is going for the 2nd WC I think the middle infield is probably in okay shape.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 Olivares is a lot more intriguing than this blurb makes him out to be. There is real upside there, albeit with obvious swing/miss concerns. Agreed. His stock is on the rise. He's certainly not a sure thing, but I think SD picked up a piece with some solid upside.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 He still has 2! So the locks to make the lineup/bench are probably: C - Martin 1B - Smoak 2B - Travis 3B - Donaldson SS - Tulowitzki CF - Pillar LF/RF - Pearce LF/RF - DH - Morales SS/2B/3B - Diaz 2B/3B - Solarte LF/RF - Carrera C - Hernandez/Alford and maybe Pompey in play for the last OF spot, and Maile, McGuire, and Jansen in play for the backup C spot. The bench actually looks good.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 For a team that seemingly is going for the 2nd WC I think the middle infield is probably in okay shape. I hope so, but there's plenty of reasons to be concerned about Travis and Tulo. This is certainly better than it Barney/Goins twosome but I also don't think they're everyday players... And I worry that's what will be asked of them. So, in a vacuum, this is a solid addition, but looking at the team as a whole, I don't see us in WC contention at all. Here's hoping.

Well Steamer has them pegged as 1 WAR players in only 80 games. 1.5 to 2 WAR players are probably fringe starters, good backups.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 I guess this means Pearce is starting in the outfield again. The bench looks set with Solarte, Diaz, Zeke, and backup catcher. Pearce obviously won’t start over Smoak or Morales. I guess they will add a RF and that will be it for the position players.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 The bench actually looks good. I'd almost argue it's a strength now.
