you only offer JD a QO and if he accepts, he plays 1B/DH, and if he crushes it at the plate and stays healthy, trade him.

You don't potentially piss off a guy like Vlad by putting him at 1B after he's been busting his balls to play a capable 3B, and publicly say he is in the minors to work on his D.

So I've established VLAD is our 3B come May and thats why we've heard they don't want to QO JD. If he accepts he's blocked, JD isnt playing anywhere else besides 3rd, VLAD hasn't played anywhere besides 3rd. Just an assumption. JD is not on this team next year.

Why would you take an elite defender and move him to another position, to make room for an average defender (at best)? If you sign JD, move Vladdy to another position.

 

Josh Donaldson hasn't been an "elite" defender since 2015, and with two seasons of nagging lower body injuries added on top of his normal defensive decline the reality is that he's likely an average at best defender at 3B moving forward, if that.

I can't really bring myself to give a s*** about whether or not Vlad plays 3B. He's likely going to have fall-down range and very negative defensive/positional value no matter where he is.

 

I'm not sure the Donaldson decisions are really that contingent on Vladdy.

Agreed. I'd be shocked if Vladdy was even an average defender at 3B...unless he undergoes a complete body transformation, and I think if that was going to happen it would've started already. He's an elite bat in a ******** body. I'm glad we have him now and not when he's 28 and you start wondering if his body is going to last.

I don't think they want to do that again just for the off chance they might acquire a compensation pick or recoup his trade value if he decides to stay. If Donaldson has health questions teams aren't going to be lining up to offer him multiyear deals. Hes going to be 33 years old with his best years behind him.

I'm not saying this is right, but I saw it put this way.

 

If you are going to bring back JD on a QO at $18M, he's probably playing 1st or DH'ing with Vlad getting most of the reps at 3rd. To have that spot, you may be eating Morales's $11M contract (releasing him or moving him with $$ for nothing). That means you may be paying $29M for the change that JD bounces back and you can get some prospects for him on an expiring contract.

 

Considering what teams got for expiring deals this year (which was next to nothing) and that Moose just got $6.5M on a 1 year deal this offseason as a FA. That's a hefty price to pay.

Pablo had a couple of years of 10 or so on defense. Prince Fielder was -20 every year. I canÂ’t really recall too many other big fat guys with really good hand eye coordination or iÂ’d Look them up too. Frank Thomas?? DhÂ’d from a young age I think.

A-rod retired and moved to a personal service contract. He kind of coaches for the Yankees. However I think they still paid him his full salary.., and I donÂ’t believe it helped their cap situation or anything. Tulos not going to manage. He could become a spring training coach. It would get him off the 40 man. Actually they may end up releasing him and paying him full salary... because I donÂ’t think he can be on the 60 day disabled list in the offseason.

A bit of both. I have no idea if he could manage or not, I just can't recalling any instance where an established star went right to being a manager. However it's pretty common for x-players to be coaches in spring training. For example I believe George Bell and Tim Raines did it. A-Rod transitioned from being a 25 million dollar a year player to being a coach.
