43211234 Verified Member Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 The schedule for 2019 is out - the opening series is vs Detroit: http://i.imgur.com/1CJ4auJ.jpg 2 off-days on Wednesdays (not counting the all-star break) next year. That's bizarre. And what the hell is that scheduling on the week of Apr 7-13? I thought there might be some event in Boston on that Wednesday but the marathon is on the 15th.

I assume it's to prepare for all the rainouts they have in April.

Todd Verified Member Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 Hate to say it but the jays should offer Donaldson a contract next year just to possible get a pick for him. There's a 80 percent chance he does not take it but if he does and can stay health he might bring in a good package deal next year. To possible help with the rebuild. But the more important thing might be the draft pick.
KevinGregg Verified Member Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 If we bring back Donaldson and the young starters pitch well we could have a good team next year. I think we have a chance to compete - the most important thing about bringing Donaldson back is that we might be adding an 8 win player. Vladdy is going to get called up next year no matter what, why waste that year?

Vladdy is going to get called up next year no matter what, why waste that year? IMO it’ll be another transition year with mainly prospects playing. Maybe we have a Braves like year where we’re competing a year early but we shouldn’t be counting on it. There’s virtually no chance JD has a 8 WAR season, but if he was brought back and started well he could then be traded to open up 3rd for Vlad. It does sound like the front office don’t want to take that risk though. Whether that’s because they think he’s done health wise, or it’s for payroll reasons, or even they don’t want to block Vlad, we don’t know.

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2018 Author Posted August 23, 2018 The schedule confirms that the Red Sox and Yankees play two games in England at London Stadium (where the Olympics were held) on June 29th & 30th. Seattle and Oakland start the season in Japan too.

I don't think they have any interest in giving Donaldson $18M guaranteed or whatever the qualifying offer will amount to next year. That is why they are desperately trying to get him healthy enough to get him on a rehab assignment so they can place him on waivers and move him by August 31st for anything that's close enough value to the compensation pick they would receive for him. And its highly unlikely he would decline the qualifying offer at this point anyway.

If Smoak gets dealt (he has cleared from what i understand) if Donaldson can play in September he could get some looks a first base with Vlad coming up.

If Donaldson is back next season I think they should rotate Vlad and Donaldson around 1B, 3B, and DH with Donaldson DHing at least twice a week. The real issue is Donaldson accepting that. I assume his first priority will be playing 3B everyday somewhere. I don't think it makes sense to roster both Smoak and Morales so it would be nice if at least one of them is moved out regardless. Both will be in the final year of their contracts. Shouldn't be difficult.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 JD will get a QO. Thats a no doubter. That's definitely not a guarantee anymore. They will trade him if he gets on a rehab assignment before August 31st. That window is rapidly closing though.

He does have a nice option year left if we can get some Interesting prospects for him it might be worth it if we don't see him as a long term piece.

I think if Smoak was going to move it would have happened in August. If a team was willing to part with anything interesting Shatkins would have been all ears. 1B and DH types just aren't really in demand anymore. And I would still think they would much prefer to part with Morales despite taking a lesser return. At least Smoak can actually play an average First Base while Morales is limited to 14 other teams in the American League.

There could be some off the field stuff that isn't public knowledge, and the front office doesn't want to deal with it if it leaks. Hopefully not, but who knows.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 Kind of a goofy schedule at the mid/end of April start of May. On the road to Minnesota, then out west for 3 against the As, then back home for 5, then back west again for 3, and central for 3, then home for 7, then back west again for 2 and the central for 4. That's a lot of time zone hopping to the west and central
