But... lol. I know we can all do this, losing Syndergaard for Dickey was atrocious. He did help in '15, but...

It really is a minor point compared to foreseen stupidity by the O's that bothers me. Trading for Parra who was clearly playing over his head and is not a guy who's goings to bridge the long distance that you need to cross to make the playoffs. So you trade Davies who has had success elsewhere. Meanwhile we waste money on draft picks on Miley, Gallardo, etc to replace him. Then there's no internationally drafting virtually (though hopefully finally this will be changed). And I don't even need to get into how much better Arrieta got better once he was traded. We suck at developing pitchers and I can't count how many times we've screwed our SP developing. Meanwhile we bid against ourselves at resigning Chris Davis who's a complete disaster. Then we resigned Trumbo at 3/48 which was idiotic. Even during the season he hit 48 HR for us, he still only put up 2ish WAR. So we resign him and we have him playing LF, I mean Trumbo is LF! And of course he doesn't hit nearly well as his career year. I mean both of these moves were so dumb. Then there's not trading Britton at the deadline last year instead of this year which we got much less value back. Not extending Manny a few years ago when we had the chance. Then not trading him earlier enough and so we got back less than we would have. Then there's not resigning Miller after trading for him and giving it to O'Day (who we'll a very good reliever, was getting older). I don't min not resinging Cruz, but you gotta improve elsewhere if you don't. I mean that was the year to go for it after winning the division in 2014. And we did almost nothing. These are the things that bother me much more than Hader.

Anyway, sorry about going off on there. Just reminds me of how dumb and frustrating this organization can be. Hopefully things will change now that it looks like Peter Angelos is out of the picture.

Didn't they also have Dylan Bundy scrap his 80-grade cutter coming out of high school because "a cookie cutter approach to pitching is much better"?

Yep.

Dan Duquette from 2012:

“We don’t like the cutter. We don’t like the cutter as an effective pitch. Name me all the great pitchers that used it as their primary pitch in the big leagues.”

For how much longer will he be the Orioles GM

I'm so sorry.

His contract is up, but it sounds like they might bring him back. One way or another I think Buck has to go. He was handed to much power after 2014, more power the GM (Which is an idiotic way to run things). I'm thankful to Buck for everything he's done, but while he's a good manager, he's not a good judge of talent (Pushing for Chris Davis signing, Trumbo etc.) and I don't think he'd want to stay on as manager for a protracted rebuild anyway. I don't like Duquette either, and I'd prefer a clean house. You know, hire a GM and let him build his vision (manager, scouting etc.). But who knows if that will happen with the O's. We'll see what kind of owners Angelos' sons are soon. Then again, there's rumors that they will ultimately sell the team, so who knows.

Arguably the worst Orioles front office move of all was the refusal to spend money on international free agents - pretty much every single successful team has at least one foreign superstar.

Phenomenally dumb to ignore a major hub of talent. Peter Angelos and his "morals." His stand of refusal was pointless given the fact that every other team was going to go after the talent regardless.

I want the A's to win but damn their rotation sucks.

And Liam Hendricks gets a start while J. A. Happ doesn't? (A lot of ex Jays here!)

I know both teams have really good bullpens but damn. Those Oakland starters could easily give away a game or two to these other offenses before you even blink.

Thank god Angelos prevented Rogers from speaking to Duquette about replacing Beeston. Dodged a bullet there.

No GM could succeed there while being forbidden from exploring a major avenue of asset accumultaion, ie the international market.

That, coupled with the lack of investment in any forward thinking prospect development and analytics (squarely on Angelos' shoulders), you're seeing the inevitable results, regardless of who was at the helm.

Duquette will get work, and probably very soon. Maybe not as a GM right away, but some position like Cherington's with the Jays.

Yeah I don't think Duquette is nearly as bad as his reputation seems to be now. The O's had a five year run where they made the playoffs three times (2012-16) until the last two seasons. That's more playoff appearances than the Jays have had the past 25 years while in the same f'n division. He was also GM of the really good Boston teams of the mid/late 90s, which Epstein benefited from.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful like crazy that we have Shapiro, but DD isn't awful.

I'm going to be honest though, those teams really weren't even that great, they took advantage when the division was really weak.

Didn't one of their playoff teams have a negative run differential when Jim f***ing Johnson had a gajillion saves?

The Jays took advantage of that too in 2015 and 2016. I mean the 2015 Jays were legitimately bad ass, but still came at a weak time in the AL East.

3 playoff appearances in 5 years, with 93, 96, and 89 wins is still pretty impressive. I hate the O's and am glad they are going through hard times now, but can't discredit them for that. If 2012 was their only playoff year (82 win pythag) then yeah it was a fluke run, but can't fluke 3 in 5.

Doesn't make Rogers tampering to talk to Duquette any less ridiculous though. Shapiro saved our asses.
