P2F Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2018 Author Posted September 5, 2018 Welp... Tommy John surgery has been “recommended” for Angels starter/DH Shohei Ohtani after an MRI revealed additional damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, the club announced (h/t Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group, on Twitter). https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/09/tommy-john-surgery-recommended-for-shohei-ohtani.html
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 TJS surgery recommended for Ohtani. He shouldn’t pitch again.

As someone who objectively wants to see Ohtani provide as much value as possible in his career you are probably right. However, as a baseball fan I just can't get behind the idea of not letting him pitch. He's such a great pitcher, it's just so fun to watch him. His start on April 8 was probably my favorite game of the year.

Ray Verified Member Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 Bregman is having a beast of a season. .944 OPS and more walks than K's.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 What's Ohtani's WAR ceiling as a full-time RF or even CF? 7 or 8 WAR? Really hard to say without seeing him play the field. My guess would be he could be a little above average defensively, so maybe 6 WAR ceiling? Purely a guess.

Potentially elite player.

It's always nice when your kids start performing in the 2nd half to salvage a lost season and give you hope for next year. Like Byron Buxton last season.

Like Byron Buxton last season. Too bad injuries derailed Buxton's season. I dream of a Soto, Robles, Buxton OF all top 50 players.

Thaddeus Malice Verified Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Maybe Ohtani should become an OF/RP hybird? That would be interesting. He went deep again tonight. Can he still hit next year while recovering from TJS?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 OMG, whoever that was singing the anthem in the Yankees game sounded like they were torturing a cat or something.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 ANAHEIM, CA—Kicking himself for not considering the potential consequences of his hasty career decision, Shohei Ohtani told reporters Wednesday that he regrets not researching which teams were good prior to signing with the Los Angeles Angels. https://sports.theonion.com/shohei-ohtani-regrets-not-researching-which-teams-were-1828835846?utm_source=Facebook&utm_content=Main&utm_medium=SocialMarketing&utm_campaign=SF It's the Onion folks
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 What's Ohtani's WAR ceiling as a full-time RF or even CF? 7 or 8 WAR? I'd say 5 max. If everything went right
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 WTF is McCutchen doing out there? He just watched a ball bounce on the outfield track and didn't even try to catch it.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Gary Sanchez is so bad behind the plate.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Severino's getting rocked, the A's would have multiple homers in Yankee Stadium and most other ballparks outside Oakland.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Holy hell Gary Sanchez is so bad at catching, Serverino is so pissed.
43211234 Verified Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Gary Sanchez seems to have developed an acute case of the yips. 4 passed balls in the inning (well one was scored a wild pitch but it was definitely catchable)
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Severino's getting rocked, the A's would have multiple homers in Yankee Stadium and most other ballparks outside Oakland. Sort of, but a lot of it isn't really his fault. Ump misses an obvious swing, batter hits next pitch for a double. McCutchen forgets the #1 job of an outfielder, Sanchez gives up two passed balls and doesn't get in front of a third to block it. I feel kinda sorry for Severino.

I swear he's always been awful at receiving, watching him in the playoffs especially is painful when usually every other team has a rock behind the plate.

I agree, but on the other hand, the Coliseum at night saved him two flyballs which would have been no-doubters in a lot of other ballparks. He wasn't that bad or good but he certainly got nothing from his defense.

Yeah, his issues with passed balls have been well documented. I just said "acute yips" because it seemed like he got in his own head in that inning after the first two.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Sanchez better be vacuuming everything in the dirt for the next inning because Severino looks like he wants nothing to do with him.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Everything hit off Severino is hit hard.

Still an average exit velocity of 105 mph on the first 5 hitters
