Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Boston reportedly offered JDM a 5 year deal close to 200 million. Where is this report? I see that they have a 5 year deal on the table, but nowhere do I see that it's for $200m.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Hosmer has multiple 7-year offers lol
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Apparently KC offered 7 years, $147M. At least the AAV isn't totally bonkers.

At $21M/year, that's fair for a 1B with consistent 20+HR power and decent walk rates, and a gold glove.. of course, not many teams really need a 1B outside of SD and KC, so his market's seriously limited..
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Apparently KC offered 7 years, $147M. At least the AAV isn't totally bonkers. Is Eric Hosmer the most overrated player in baseball since Derek Jeter?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Is Eric Hosmer the most overrated player in baseball since Derek Jeter? Derek Jeter had some 6 and 7 war seasons on his resume. He at least lived up to the hype at points in his career and overall he had a legitimately great career. Hosmer's nothing special. He's the rare player who is overrated on both offense and defense. The hype hasn't reached Jeter level of irritating but I'd say it's more disconnected from reality than Jeter's hype was. The big difference is that the hype is going to crash right down when Hosmer's contract becomes an alabtross whereas Jeter will still walk on water when we're all dead.

I just wish Dombrowski was caught up in the hype.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 And yet Jeter is going to be a first ballot HOF'er. As he should be. But Scott Rolen won't be and Rolen was a much better player, that's my point. Jeter is a HOF but he's not a top ballot guy like he's being treated.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Anyone here applying for the Fangraphs writer job? I would but with only 5 years to a juicy pension, makes no sense.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 And yet Jeter is going to be a first ballot HOF'er. He's incredibly overrated defensively but offensively he's a surefire HOF any day of the week. The issue I think most have is that he's revered as some defensive wizard, when he was overall pretty below average and downright awful the majority of his career. The fact that he had such a great bat and played in New York cause many to give him way more credit for defense than he deserved, and is actually overrated as a result. The fact that Scott Rolen and Jeter finished their careers 1 WAR apart and 1 is talked about like he's the second coming of Christ and the other is just written off the HOF ballot likes he's nothing... shows that Jeter is in fact overrated, whilst Rolen is criminally underrated.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 Jeter being overrated has more to do with him being considered one of MLB's top stars each and every year he was in the league when in reality he only once was in the Top 5 for WAR. John is right as well, his defense was really s***** at times throughout his career. He was able to correct it mid career but it again tanked once he got old. Playing for the most storied franchise in sports and winning titles certainly helped with his rep. He's more than qualified for the HoF but his candidacy revolves around a lengthy and healthy career where he racked up lots of WAR and counting stats each year without actually putting up superstar numbers.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 Jeter has just a couple of WAR more than Larry Walker, but played about 750 more games. For the record, Rolen played 50 more games than Walker. By WAR, Walker ~ Rolen >> Jeter Walker had no weaknesses in his game. It's ridiculous the short shrift he is getting from the HOF voters.

Voters still look at position. Corner OF's are "supposed" to have gaudy offensive numbers, which middle infielders historically don't put up at the same level. Jeter gets more love for being a SS. Deserved or not, it's the way it is.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 Rolen played what's probably the worst position for getting into the HOF. Third base is treated like an offensive position when it's a defensive one and that's why it's under-represented in the HOF. Rolen's excellent play at 3B should be valued more than Jeter's mediocre SS play but that's just not how it is.

The thing I find most detestable about Jeter is how much of a selfish ******* he was/is, specifically how he made the Yankees move A-Rod, a much better defensive SS, to play 3rd. That and the gift baskets and I think Jeter is not only an overrated player, but a severely underrated douchebag.

E: didn't Jim Edmonds fall off the ballot too? Man, the BBWAA should not have the authority that it does. They have no clue what they're doing. I think eventually they are going to change the HOF process but knowing baseball, probably won't be for awhile.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 Edmonds, Lofton, Kevin Brown...anyone else a major snub? Thank god Raines and Blyleven got in, at least and hopefully Edgar too. How do you name a f***ing award after a guy and not put him in the Hall?

Boras is now claiming that those numbers are wrong and that Hosmer wants more anyway. I assume that probably means it includes various non guaranteed add ons like an all star bonus etc. Would be surprised if he turned down a truly guaranteed $150m deal.

The HOF process is f***ed. I don't disagree with anything you're saying or that Walker is the superior player. I'm really curious to see how Omar Vizquel fares. Imagine that D in the OF...but with that same O production. Would he even get a sniff? Not a chance. I bet he gets way more votes than he probably deserves. Was he a fantastic defensive SS? Yes. But he was not a very good offensive player....not at all. .688 career OPS. But 2877 hits. Curious to see if the voting has evolved at all...voters (used to/still) love their hits.
