Match-ups on the bump...

Game 1, Toronto Blue Jays @ Boston Red Sox

Monday, September 4, 7:10 PM ET , Fenway Park

Rick Porcello, RHP... ERA- 4.45, FIP- 4.41, xFIP- 4.26, WAR- 2.1

The sinkerballer will face the Blue Jays for the second consecutive time. He turned in a strong outing in Toronto last week, allowing six hits and a run over 6 1/3 innings while picking up his fifth win in his last six starts.

J.A. Happ, LHP... ERA- 3.96, FIP- 4.03, xFIP- 4.03, WAR- 1.9

J.A. Happ is set to face the Red Sox for the second time in as many starts. During his last outing, Happ allowed just one run on four hits and four walks over six innings. Prior to that he allowed five earned runs in back-to-back starts.

Toronto Blue Jays @ Boston Red Sox

Tuesday, September 5, 7:10 PM ET , Fenway Park

Eduardo Rodriguez, LHP... ERA- 4.40, FIP- 4.08 xFIP- 4.41, WAR- 1.6

The lefty hasn’t been able to regain his form since returning from the DL, going 0-3 with a 5.47 ERA in his last nine starts. Rodriguez is 1-1 with a 4.23 ERA in eight starts at Fenway this season. He is 1-3 with a 6.15 ERA in his career vs. Toronto.

Marco Estrada, RHP... ERA- 5.23, FIP- 4.54, xFIP- 4.99, WAR- 2.2

Marco Estrada had been making progress but took a step back in his last game. He allowed six runs on 10 hits over five innings. It was the second time in August he allowed six earned runs; the other starts he allowed three earned runs or fewer.

Toronto Blue Jays @ Boston Red Sox

Wednesday, September 6, 7:10 PM ET , Fenway Park

Doug Fister, RHP... ERA- 4.19, FIP- 4.21, xFIP-4.54, WAR- 0.8

The sinkerballer has been one of the best stories of the second half for the Red Sox. Since being claimed off waivers from the Angels in late June, Fister is 4-2 with a 3.05 ERA while filling in for the injured David Price.

Joe Biagini, RHP... ERA- 5.01, FIP- 3.76, xFIP- 3.79, WAR- 1.6

Joe Biagini is coming off his best start of the season. He didn't allow a run and struck out a career-high 10 batters in his last outing against the Orioles. The seven innings matched a career high, something he did twice before.

Preview...

The Red Sox will look to use this three-game series against the last-place Blue Jays at Fenway Park to try to extend their 3 1/2-game lead in the American League East as they head down the stretch.

Boston swept Toronto last week and is 10-3 in the season series.

Right-hander Rick Porcello will try to beat the Blue Jays for the second time in a week when he starts Monday's opener. In the start last week at Rogers Centre, Porcello held the Jays to a run on six hits over 6 2/3 innings while walking two and striking out seven. He also previously faced the Blue Jays on April 19, and was saddled with the loss despite allowing just three unearned runs over seven innings.

The Blue Jays will counter with veteran lefty J.A. Happ, who allowed one run over six innings in a no-decision against Boston last week.

Toronto is 25-36 against the AL East and has lost seven of its last 10 games against the division. That is by far the lowest winning percentage of any team within the AL.

• Red Sox reliever Carson Smith is nearing the end of his very long road to recovery, and it's possible he will be activated prior to this series opener. Smith appeared in just three games for Boston last season prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery.

• Toronto third baseman Josh Donaldson enters this game on a tear. He has 16 home runs over his last 34 games, a stretch that dates back to July 27, and is the most in the Major Leagues over that same span. Donaldson is a career .303 hitter (10-for-33) with two extra-base hits vs. Porcello.

• This could be a good matchup for Boston outfielder Chris Young to shake out of his recent slump, not to mention his season-long struggle against lefty pitchers. Young has experienced the most success vs. Happ of anyone in the Red Sox's lineup, going 5-for-16 with two homers and five RBIs.

You guys thinking September call ups will play everyday are out of your mind, especially against teams in the playoff picture.

Why that's stupid we have nothing to play for. If they are here they should play.

And let's be honest, both of these guys are likely to be bench players in their careers.

Likely, yes... hopefully they become something more. Figures the Jays are crushing the Bosox, when I have the latter in a suicide pool. :(

Anyone have any idea when Gibbons is back???

Before the game started, Arash said no timetable for his return, must be something bad in the family.
