Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 Thought this deserved its own thread. There's nothing physically wrong with him, but he's not right mentally right now. Damn, saw this run along the ticker at the Pub for lunch. Feel for him as I experience the same issues from time to time, this could linger for some time or be overcome shortly, if he ends up needing meds etc, he could be out for awhile until he gets acclimated. Tough blow for him and the Jays!
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 The fact that Roberto is being openly(publicly) admitting to his anxiety will help in itself. I'm sure there's been discussion regarding how many pro athletes are successfully dealing with this issue, Grienke for one. Osuna seems like a tough mature kid and has been on his own for a while now, so hopefully he just hit a temporary wall, it happens to everyone who's been separated from loved ones. Anxiety is a very complex issue where it can just a "blip" or a lifetime battle, hopefully in Osuna's case it's just a "blip". It also puts perspective on the issues that so many Vets must be dealing/dealt with in their lifetimes, especially the Vets that were in WW1,WW2 and Vietnam where there was a draft. If pro athletes with all the glory and the money can develop anxiety in their surroundings, just imagine what what can happen to 18-23 year old kids who are taken from their families and thrown into hell half way around the world.
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 As a guy with anxiety issues (especially social anxiety), this breaks my heart. I hope Osuna takes as much time as he needs. Anxiety manifests itself in so many different ways, so just because Roberto looks like a stone cold robot on the mound doesn't mean he isn't human. I should know. My panic attacks are internal. You'd never know I'm going through one unless I told you something specific to look for (subtle, specific body language change). I've also struggled growing up with anxiety. It's not easy opening up to people and trying to seek help. Often times people will tell you to "get over it" which is extremely ignorant because anxiety isn't something that you can just cure with a snap of two fingers. It's almost akin to being a prisoner in your own body. There are days when you should be happy, but you aren't. Instead you feel "nothing" and you go through the motions throughout the entire day. I commend Osuna for having the courage to be open about his struggles with anxiety, and I hope the Blue Jays give him as much time off as he needs.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 The reason players don't often admit this kind of thing, is because it will cost them millions. When Osuna becomes a free agent, he'll get paid less, because teams will be cautious about his anxiety. I remember when the Expos traded a ton to get Fernando Tatis, and the guy had too much anxiety to bat. I'm sorry, but unless the anxiety is related to baseball, Osuna can get out there and throw a god damned baseball for five minutes, and deal with his issues after the game.

Not sure you really understand anxiety and how f***ed up it is when it gets to a debilitating level. It's not something you can just set aside for 5 minutes and deal with later

Somethings are more important than baseball. Osuna has had our back for 75 saves. The least we can do is have his back when he's having issues with mental health.

birchy Verified Member Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 Have to remember this guy has like a grade 8 education. He left school to work to help his family. I'm sorry, but what does education level have to do with anxiety? Or perhaps I missed your point...?

Didn't seem to matter when Greinke signed for all that $..

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 D'oh! lol... it was great to see Osuna out there today, pure filth.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 lol... it was great to see Osuna out there today, pure filth. Escobar coming around and scoring on that ******** hit would have gave me anxiety. So I'm really glad Osuna was able to come back and strikeout Torres.

Zack Greinke did just fine.

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 I'm sorry, but what does education level have to do with anxiety? Or perhaps I missed your point...? He has had a tough life. Had to deal with pressures most teenagers have no concept of. He is not worldly in that sense. Didn't mean to link lack of education to being more susceptible to mental illness just trying to give context overall.

It's actually incredible that he can even throw a strike, considering how overwhelming this appears to be for him at the moment. It's a very stupid idea to just throw him on the mound in this mindset and assume he won't implode. Which, by the way, would make his anxiety MUCH worse going forward.

It may be that once he gets out there on the mound, that could be the one place where the general anxiety is pushed back in his mind while he is focused on the task at hand. Probably it depends how much of the anxiety is job related.

He may not have known how he would do and was hesitant to go out there thinking it may affect his performance. But now that he has had an excellent outing, his thoughts on it may have changed. It's not like he has been struggling. In fact he has been going through probably his best stretch to date in his career.
