Gibby needs to not worry about hurting veteran feelings and bat Travis ahead of Tulo for a few weeks until he finds his timing. Travis batting eighth is absolutely ridiculous.

Oh well, Cashner was the better pitcher today.. and for once he actually didn't have his bullpen blow it (he's much better than his record shows)..

Bring on the Reds and their crappy pitching staff.. they can hit a ton, but their pitching... ugh. Lots of 8-7 games...

I agree, except Travis should be batting above Donaldson also.

Donaldson hasn't played much this year. He is probably at early spring season form at the best. I am worried that he will be mediocre for a month like Bautista was.

If by that you mean Travis batting 2nd with Donaldson 3rd, that's something I could get behind.

It's good that the next three games are against the Reds whose pitching is mediocre (23rd ranked by ERA), so that should be good for helping JD and Tulo get back up to speed.

I was thinking it is interesting how within a couple weeks the Jays batting order has gone from an embarrassment to almost an embarrassment of riches. While I understand the rationale of having the stronger hitters at the top of the order to get more PAs, it helps to have a solid bottom of the order to really keep the pressure on the opposing pitcher. Right now I could see something like:

Pillar

Travis

Bautista

Smoak

Donaldson

Morales

Tulo

Martin

Coghlan/Carrera

I think that's what he means, and I agree.

Where do you put Bautista then...leadoff?

I wouldn't mind Travis hitting 2nd but I would put Donaldson at 6 or 7 until it is evident that he is at big league form, and hopefully that would only be a few games.

Now I regret agreeing with you

It would be so baseball though if the Jays lost this game after winning the Bolsinger start and the game where they ran out reserves vs Darvish.

Why do I do these things?

I am glad that you know that Donaldson will show no ill effects from being off for 6 weeks.

That's what his rehab assignment was for. When your best hitter successfully completes a rehab stint, you put him back in the meat of the order where he belongs. You don't insult the guy by bumping him down in case he doesn't hit well.

If that insults Donaldson then it is time for him to go. This team with all its regulars got off to a 1-9 start. It was with several so-called scrubs that the team started winning. A hot Devon Travis, Justin Smoak and now Jose Bautista had a lot to do with that, so why would someone want to put a rusty Donaldson in the #2 spot over Travis or Bautista. The team can't afford to sink in the standings again.

Gibbons was right in resting Donaldson and Tulowitzki on Saturday for their own protection, hopefully he will be sensible and ease them back into the batting order.
