Big if true

TBH I was getting pretty f***ing sick of watching baserunners go wild with Salty behind the dish. Would-be stealers were a perfect 9 for 9 off him, and none of them were particularly close IIRC.

There haven't been a lot of objectively bad moves by this new regime, but giving the backup C job to Salty is one of them. It wasn't even an emergency: they had all offseason to secure a replacement for Thole and the best they could do was Salty. I'd love to know who though this was a good idea, and also why they thought that. He's bad at literally everything.

If Maile is replacement level and Salty is -1.5 WAR this is a huge improvement. It'd be the equivalent of calling up a real solid 2 WAR prospect to replace Zeke. That's how bad Salty is.

Sort of. It's not like Salty was playing everyday though.

He was at -0.5 through 10 games. Zero WAR is a big improvement over that pace.

Not even including his awful framing lol

I just realized that this is the first of what will, if this season continues as it has, be many casualties. Hopefully Tepera is next.

To put this perspective... It took 50 games of Thole to get - 0.5 WAR. Salty bled as much value in a tenth of the games and Thole is a much better framer so the effective difference is that Salty this year was considerably more than ten times worse than Thole last year. Edited by KingKat

By the sounds of it - it's somewhat difficult to find anyone who wants to play in Toronto behind Martin. I believe there were reports of more than one catcher who turned down more money here to sign elsewhere for playing time purposes. It's like you're looking for the guys who's actually good - but thinks he sucks and has to settle for a job in another country where he'll only play 40 games a year.

Didn't matter he was still on pace for far worse than that even in limited time. That's how much he sucks.

I'd be completely fine with a backup who couldn't hit a beach ball but was a very good catcher. Like you said it would be hard to find a good catcher who would be cool with backing up one of the best in the game. The only issue would be if Martin got hurt for an extended period of time, but we seem to always have that problem anyway. Anyone know of a catcher sitting in the upper minors that would fit this bill that might not be expensive to acquire?

Yeah. Holy s*** I didn't realize he was so awful.

Basically an average defensive catcher who is a great framer would be a prime backup candidate. It's hard to know which minor league C's are good at framing though. Maile, from what I know, is good defensively and an average framer (he's got enough big league time to know that). Which makes him a god compared to Salty.

Yeah would be nice if they would go with Barnes over Tepera.

Luke Maile is my favorite player for at least this week. He's not good at all yet still represents a humongous upgrade.

So is McGuire going up to AAA?

If so, it might open the door for Jansen to go to AA and Pentacost to actually start catching again

damn you, was just about to post this

Pentecost is shedding the bust label although he is 24

Jansen catching in AA at 22 has to put him in top 15 prospect list..... reports are his defense is sound, and now he is hitting

ETA for these guys? Pentecost sometime in 2018, and Jansen a year later? Lines up well with Martin's contract.

Don't have much hope for McGuire. Has org depth guy written over him.
