Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2017 Author Posted April 28, 2017 Big if true TBH I was getting pretty f***ing sick of watching baserunners go wild with Salty behind the dish. Would-be stealers were a perfect 9 for 9 off him, and none of them were particularly close IIRC.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 There haven't been a lot of objectively bad moves by this new regime, but giving the backup C job to Salty is one of them. It wasn't even an emergency: they had all offseason to secure a replacement for Thole and the best they could do was Salty. I'd love to know who though this was a good idea, and also why they thought that. He's bad at literally everything.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 If Maile is replacement level and Salty is -1.5 WAR this is a huge improvement. It'd be the equivalent of calling up a real solid 2 WAR prospect to replace Zeke. That's how bad Salty is.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 at least he got a few mil and free tickets to yesterday's Pred/Blues games

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 Sort of. It's not like Salty was playing everyday though. He was at -0.5 through 10 games. Zero WAR is a big improvement over that pace.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 He was at -0.5 through 10 games. Zero WAR is a big improvement over that pace. Not even including his awful framing lol
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 I just realized that this is the first of what will, if this season continues as it has, be many casualties. Hopefully Tepera is next.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 (edited) To put this perspective... It took 50 games of Thole to get - 0.5 WAR. Salty bled as much value in a tenth of the games and Thole is a much better framer so the effective difference is that Salty this year was considerably more than ten times worse than Thole last year. By the sounds of it - it's somewhat difficult to find anyone who wants to play in Toronto behind Martin. I believe there were reports of more than one catcher who turned down more money here to sign elsewhere for playing time purposes. It's like you're looking for the guys who's actually good - but thinks he sucks and has to settle for a job in another country where he'll only play 40 games a year.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 Sort of. It's not like Salty was playing everyday though. Didn't matter he was still on pace for far worse than that even in limited time. That's how much he sucks.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 I never thought I could stomach watching another Thole esque talent on the team..and then Salty showed up
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 Nice move.... We still suxx (Zeke, Goins, Tepera)

I'd be completely fine with a backup who couldn't hit a beach ball but was a very good catcher. Like you said it would be hard to find a good catcher who would be cool with backing up one of the best in the game. The only issue would be if Martin got hurt for an extended period of time, but we seem to always have that problem anyway. Anyone know of a catcher sitting in the upper minors that would fit this bill that might not be expensive to acquire?

Basically an average defensive catcher who is a great framer would be a prime backup candidate. It's hard to know which minor league C's are good at framing though. Maile, from what I know, is good defensively and an average framer (he's got enough big league time to know that). Which makes him a god compared to Salty.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 Luke Maile is my favorite player for at least this week. He's not good at all yet still represents a humongous upgrade.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 Won't be missed, Thole may have swung the bat like a woman but at least he could make contact with the ball.
Drumcliff Verified Member Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 How do you know you've got the worst record in Major League Baseball? When you're excited by replacing your backup catcher.

SnowyEvening19 Verified Member Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 I would not have complained if Dioner Navarro came back to Jays for his 3rd stint
JuniorFelix Verified Member Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 Maile, Martin, Saltalamacchia...Sounds like a good start to a Charcuterie tray.

So is McGuire going up to AAA? If so, it might open the door for Jansen to go to AA and Pentacost to actually start catching again

Jansen also 2 for 2 .. at Dh
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 Pentecost actually caching tonight in Dunedin. 2 for 2 so far. Jansen also 2 for 2 .. at Dh ETA for these guys? Pentecost sometime in 2018, and Jansen a year later? Lines up well with Martin's contract. Don't have much hope for McGuire. Has org depth guy written over him.
