Laika Community Moderator Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Blue Jays team president Mark Shapiro discussed his experiences in the game with MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, and the wide-ranging interview touched on the Jays’ immediate plans for 2018. Past reports have suggested that the Jays are still looking to contend next season, and Shapiro reiterated that by suggesting that there is a priority towards retaining the increased fan support that has surfaced from the team’s recent postseason success. “In this situation, the desire to win and to continue to give a relatively new fan base — because a lot of fans that are coming are new fans — a reason to cheer and to come to the ballpark is probably more important than just maybe pushing the express button on how to regenerate and reinvigorate the farm system,” Shapiro said.

Not a definitive statement.... I'm sure they are listening to all offers. If the right offer comes, they will accept. JD, Osuna, Sanchez - doesn't matter, with the current state of the franchise, only Vladdy, Bo and maybe 1 or 2 other minor leaguers would be considered untouchable.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 You never have any untouchables.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Let's be real here, this regime won't be trading real prospects any time soon. They might not be untouchable, but realistically, they won't be traded. With the August/Sept JD has had, it makes sense to trade him this winter, but the definition of insanity has to come into play here with Rogers. I would like to see the Jays end up like Cardinals teams who could lose players to free agency and not miss a beat. Like they lost Pujols and still went to the playoffs four straight years after that. If the Jays could make the playoffs in 2018, then place Vlad Da God at 3B in '19 and keep winning (obviously rest of the roster has to be improved), then that would be all kinds of awesome. That's not realistic though. If they don't trade JD then they better have one hell of an off season.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 You never have any untouchables. Agreed. Vlad is untouchable though.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 You never have any untouchables. Meh, I do. It would take a lot for me to part with any of them.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Meh, I do. It would take a lot for me to part with any of them. Agreed, at this point it would take a massive overpay to get Vladdy - you'd be trading a guy with a good chance to be generational And some here were willing to move Vlad for Cutch last offseason, lol
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Can you explain this, mate? The former... Why do use the word "mate", so much? Are you from the UK, or pretending like you are? Mate? That may come across as douchy, but I'm curious.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Meh, I do. It would take a lot for me to part with any of them. Yeah but you still would trade them for the right offer. It'd be stupid not to listen on any player in trade talks.

That's why he hasn't been laid since he broke up with his ex the bikini model.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Yeah but you still would trade them for the right offer. It'd be stupid not to listen on any player in trade talks. Well of course, but the type of talent it would take for Shatkins to part with, say, Bo and Vlad, would be a non-starter anyway, so they're basically untouchable; and I, for one, am happy that's the case.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 The Toronto Blue Jays won’t consider trading Josh Donaldson unless they could find a trade that improves them for the 2018 season, sources tell FanRag Sports. Which is to say, he almost surely isn’t going anywhere. There has been a lot of speculation about a deal for Donaldson, and it’s possible Toronto could look at trades this winter, but the reality is that he will stay put. Blue Jays people believe they can compete next year. And why not? They weren’t far out of the race this year, and they suffered more injuries to stars than anyone in the league, with Aaron Sanchez, Troy Tulowitzki, Devon Travis, J.A. Happ and Donaldson himself all missing significant time this year. That is from Heyman's latest article. Aside from the derp about the Jays not being far out of the race this year (if you call never being .500 and having one of the worst run differentials in baseball being close), not all that surprising considering who owns this team. Rogers wants dat cash. Although I wonder what a deal that improves 2018 even looks like. No team is going to trade any good existing players for one year of Donaldson as it would hurt their own ability to compete. It would have to be a Gord Ash type of trade then, something where the Jays are taking back vets to keep chugging along the .500 mark while the other team is getting the best player in the deal. No thanks.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 I don't believe that for a second. Say a team is willing to trade a Tatis JR and a couple lower level prospects then Donaldson will be gone in a second even though it makes their team worse next year.

Hope you're right, though I don't think anyone gives up a haul for one year of JD. Still rather trade him than watch him put up a 6-7 war season on a .500 team and then leave. I fear Rogers is already driving team direction.

If he's putting up 7 WAR next year and they're only a .500 team then something went extremely wrong.

BTS Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 If he's putting up 7 WAR next year and they're only a .500 team then something went extremely wrong. I don't know about that. The supporting cast isn't very good. Offensively you've got three players you'd expect to be about league average next year (Martin, Smoak, Pillar), and the pitching staff is Happ, Osuna, and Stroman that you'd expect to be average or better. I agree with Jim that this team likely looks a lot like the Angels of the last few years even if Donaldson puts up a 7-win season.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 Yeah it's basically the Mike Trout Angels of the past few years. That's my fear with 2018. Shapkins are going to need one hell of an off season to put this team back into the 85-90 win projection next year.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 There havent been many top position players traded within the past few years but JD Martinez went for very little and Cespedes fetched a top pitching prospect in Fulmer, but he had about a year and a half left on his deal. This organization can't afford to lose JD for nothing thoughw

Shapkins are going to need one hell of an off season to put this team back into the 85-90 win projection next year. Trading Donaldson and aiming for 2019 seems more realistic than trying to be good next year It has taken me several months to accept this The only alternative is to spend big in free agency because we can't afford to trade the top prospects at this point. Amd. I can't see them signing any of the big names this off season We would have to keep Donaldson, sign a legit corner OF and a SP2 caliber guy to realistically keep in it next year IYAM. And even then we'd need way better health from key guys like Sanchez and Martin
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 Oh, and Devon Travis Sometimes I forget he's on the team actually (He may be a write off at this point I suppose)
