burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Honestly, I would eat some salary and ship out Morales. Have Pearce DH. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to trade Pillar. Might as well trade Pearce too. His bat doesn't really play at DH and he's old as well.

They'd have to eat a pretty large chunk of it to get another team to take him. They might see more value in getting an actual asset back for Pearce rather than punting $15-20mil to get rid of Morales, who they liked enough to overpay in the first place. Which is a shame because Pearce is better but there's clearly too many DH/1B types on this roster. Someone has to go.

Shave that down to 2/16 and he can be moved, especially if he hits 30 HR this year, which he is on pace for.
TorontonianJD Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 What are chances Joe Smith signs again with Jays in off season?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 It's too bad Pearce is no longer considered a 2b option. That would really simplify things as far as creating room in the of.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 What are chances Joe Smith signs again with Jays in off season? FWIW - which is probably nothing - Smith said he really enjoyed his time in Toronto and that, "you never know, I could end up coming back here again" in a post-trade interview with Hazel Mae.

His family situation will factor. Staying in Cleveland would probably be his first choice. Then again if the situation improves maybe he rewards the Jays in 2018 for doing him a solid in 2017.

Yeah next year we can't roster 3 1B/DH, 2 reserve middle infielders, and 5 OF unless there's more overlap. Pearce isn't good enough in the OF to play everyday there but his bat is too good to be a platoon/4th OF.
tpurewal97 Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 What's the Starting Rotation looking like next season? Some interesting free agents to look at : Andrew Cashner , Jeremy Hellickson , Alex Cobb , Lance Lynn. Would love Cobb+Hellickson Marcus Stroman Aaron Sanchez Alex Cobb J.A Happ Jeremy Hellickson

Some interesting free agents to look at : Andrew Cashner , Jeremy Hellickson , Alex Cobb , Lance Lynn. Would love Cobb+Hellickson Marcus Stroman Aaron Sanchez Alex Cobb J.A Happ Jeremy Hellickson I like Cobb if he's not too expensive, another year away from his TJ and still only 29. Trouble is free agent starters normally are expensive! If we're going to spend silly money on a starter I'd want it to be Otani, and then fill out the rotation depth with scrubs and/or Biagini.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Yeah next year we can't roster 3 1B/DH, 2 reserve middle infielders, and 5 OF unless there's more overlap. Pearce isn't good enough in the OF to play everyday there but his bat is too good to be a platoon/4th OF. I'd be all for cutting their losses with Morales. They could try trading him to a dumb team looking for power and offer to eat half of the salary. This would allow Pearce to DH.

However, the FO may want to see if Morales can justify his contract and prove them right in seeing something in him (like what appears to have happened with Smoak). In that scenario I wonder if they'd prefer to trade Pearce who out of the 3 is the only one with just 1 more year of control instead of 2.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Tim Beckham would have been a nice addition to this club. I don't think the O's paid a huge price if I'm not mistaken. Would have been a significant upgrade over either Goins or Barney right now and he's the type of guy you can keep around for next season as a third MI to rotate between Tulo & Travis. Has posted a 1.3 WAR so far this season and would be under control until 2021. Agreed. No idea why the Rays decided to move him. He was finally providing them value. Very confusing move.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Agreed. No idea why the Rays decided to move him. He was finally providing them value. Very confusing move. Well, he actually sucks. And they already have a better defensive SS in Hechavarria, and then there's Willy Adames who will be up soon. It makes sense.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Well, he actually sucks. And they already have a better defensive SS in Hechavarria, and then there's Willy Adames who will be up soon. It makes sense. He has been alright this season (1.3 WAR) and has some decent pop for a MI. Obviously he'll never be an elite player though still would be a significant upgrade over what the Blue Jays are rolling out with right now. Considering that Tulo is on the decline and Travis being injury prone, Beckham would have been a nice fit here in Toronto as a third MI who can rotate between those two positions. I'd rather give Beckham 400 AB's instead of spreading them out between Goins and Barney.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 He has to be one of the worst 1st overall picks in recent memory. How about Mark Appel?

Some interesting free agents to look at : Andrew Cashner , Jeremy Hellickson , Alex Cobb , Lance Lynn. Would love Cobb+Hellickson Marcus Stroman Aaron Sanchez Alex Cobb J.A Happ Jeremy Hellickson I'd rather bring back Estrada on a cheap one-year deal as the No. 5 starter instead of Hellickson. Cobb would be interesting though could be expensive especially if he pitches well down the stretch and in the postseason. His K/9 is pretty low, and with him being 29 and already having TJS that could drive down his price somewhat, though teams will pay a high price for starting pitching. If Ian Kennedy got 5 years/$70 million from the Royals last year, good chance Cobb gets something similar.

I like him and with the control will provide great value. Nice move by the Orioles.
Johny Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 of tough loss last night after Estrada finally gave us a good game! I think its time the blue jays thought about next year. But like they said the American league is so tight right now the Blue Jays have a good shot to make it to the playoffs if they can get a good run going!
Ray Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 I just really want us to try and sign Marco to an extension. I think a team like the Cubs would be all over someone like Estrada if he's a free agent. There's no one else in this impending free agent class that has the upside of Marco Estrada for his price tag.

Johny Verified Member Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 id say get rid of atkins. Cleveland never made the playoffs until he left I guess whether the blue jays put a playoff team on the field is up to atkins.

baseballsss Verified Member Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 How many years will Darvish get? Will someone go over 5? Probably. The way contracts are handed out these days wouldn't be surprised to see him get 7.
