Would love to see the Blue Jays get Keon Broxton from the Brewers.

He's been so bad in the majors and is 27, im not opposed to the idea but definitely not giving anything of value to get him.

Yeah, there's way too much swing and miss that his power doesn't overcome.

He'd be Melvin Upton all over again except without the track record. No thanks.

He was just DFA so we wouldn't be!

You don't trade one of the greatest players in franchise history for a fringe future relief pitcher.

Yes you do...especially if that player is Bautista imo lol

Man looking at the Jays roster, who the f*** can they trade for any value at all? That's the most depressing part about this team. The veterans aren't worth s***.

I've always though Toronto should just re-roll in 2018 and the lack of clear trade candidates just reinforces that... this window has one more year. It's a good thing, guys.

2018 could be fun. Mix these veterans in with some other younger guys like Alford, Pompey, Tellez, Jansen, SRF, Gurriel, RP Greene, Mayza.

And then in 2019 the next window starts. The Vlad Bo era.

Imo, i don't think that's wise, as making the playoffs next year with the team you describe would be remote. Hopefully Smoak stays consistent for the remainder of the year with 40+ HR. Trade JD and Smoak this off season and bolster the 2019 window.

Seems the best trade candidate right now is Happ, but trading him would make attempting to contend in 2018 that much more difficult. There seems to be differing opinions on whether it would be better to trade Donaldson now or during the off season (or keep him for 2018).

I don't think I have seen this mentioned before on this forum, but what about trading JD and moving Tulo (who is losing range at SS) to 3B. He still has the big arm, so maybe he could do OK there.

Can Gurriel and/or Urena effectively take over at SS in 2018 ?

I'd say they have 2 options right now. Retool for the 2018 over the offseason and make a run of it for one more season with Donaldson, or concede the 2018 season by trading Donaldson and Happ for near major league talent ready that'll hopefully be ready to contribute in 2019 when guys like Bo and Vlad will be ready.

Either way, this "rebuild" does not need to be a long and drawn out process. Worst case scenario you should be right back in the race in 2019.

Obviously it's an awful time to trade Donaldson because of how he is playing right now. That's a big part of the calculus.

Tulo's bat doesn't play at 3B anymore and those two won't be ready to take over SS. I think he's still a decent SS. It is what it is - he has no trade value so he's entrenched there.

Smoak is having a great year but I don't know if he'd fetch that much, even he finishes strong. Just such a long track record of mediocrity. Well sucking, actually.

It's the guys with no trade value that could still reasonably be good at baseball in 2018 (Tulo, Martin, Morales, Pearce) that make trying one more time inviting.

There's also absolutely no reason they can't just try again and if it doesn't work flip Smoak, Donaldson, and Happ at the deadline in 2018

Problem with that is if those guys under perform you are aren't getting much back. We saw with Martinez that even a great player who is a rental isn't going to return much so you run the risk of the team falling again and then you've lost a chance to capitalize and get good value back.

Then you're going to have to rebuild anyway so you may as well get some more blue chip prospects that will come be coming into the majors at the same time as Vlad, Bo etc..

And the reality is even if you try to compete next year its likely for a Wildcard. The Red Sox and Yankees are 90 win teams and unless the Jays make some crazy signings or trades they are going in with a mid 80 win team with all those guys back.

JD Martinez is not a great player. Great hitter, but a statue in the OF.

There's really no rational argument for not taking my approach to things. Sorry, folks. Donaldson is the train that carries everything else and he's having a shittacular year so they need to just hold him anyway.

Going for it again next year is a joke. We are 9 games below .500 and have holes all over the roster that need to be addressed on top of no reason to expect that any of these old scrubs are going to improve enough to actually make any sort of difference in a playoff race. By the way; we were making the playoffs with Donaldson playing at an ~8 WAR level. Even if he turns it around next year, understand that his days of playing at that level are likely long gone, so while a 5 WAR season would still be very good, its 3 less wins on a roster that already has zero wiggle room.

If you could bring in a better defensive SS, and Tulo can handle 3B, maybe you end up with overall better D on the left side. As for his bat 'playing at 3B', I feel like we don't need a prototypical power bat at 3B, but also hopefully Tulo could rebound and once again be a 20 HR, .800 OPS guy. BUT the OF corners are the area where the Jays need to do a better job of adding some thump to the lineup without sacrificing too much on the defense side, especially in this no Donaldson scenario.

The more I think about it, the less less likely I think the Jays can contend in 2018, short of going all out on free agents and hitting pay dirt there.

There are like TEN players on this team right now that have been unexpectedly bad, and could reasonably be expected to regress upwards in 2018.

Some of you guys are f***ing embarrassingly stupid. Borderline intellectual functioning. Get a new hobby. The CFL needs fans.

I can see NJH's logic only because trading JD now would be selling very low and the Jays won't be getting the types of prospects they need in return for him. The question is how will his value look in the winter? If he has a great second half, then that would help, but if not, then what can the Jays realistically trade? I mean, other than the young pitching, they have nothing to trade. It's actually worse than being just old. They are old and have no value.

I can see the logic in keeping JD and giving this group one more shot but only if they can't get appropriate value for him now. Seriously, a fire sale with nothing to trade isn't really all that enticing. We ain't getting what the White Sox got in return for their guys.

Tulo derives a lot of his value right now from simply being capable of manning the SS position. Take that away from him and he's nothing. You could just grab someone like Trevor Plouffe for free and get the same (or similar) 3B production

Well the rationale is would you rather have a team that is better in 2020-2024 than a 50 % chance at the 2nd Wildcard spot next year. Even though Donaldson isn't having a good year teams will give up more for him at the deadline then they will in the offseason. Biggest hurdle would be the $ involved.

Even if he turns back to a 5 Win player is Martin, Morales and Pillar going to get any better while another year older? They still need 2 OFers, 2 SP and perhaps a 2nd baseman. There is a lot of work to be done this offseason.

This is what nobody gets. Unless the rebuild idiots want to dump Stroman, Sanchez, and Osuna while they're at it?

Then the next window becomes like 2021 at the earliest. Woooo
