Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 One 55 and two 50's. They don't like our prospects at all.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Well Vlad being a 55 is based purely on his proximity from the majors. He's probably a future 65 guy. Those KATOH projections for a 17 year old are wild.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 "His approach at the plate is, predictably, epicurean. But embedded deep within his genealogy is an ability to make this approach viable, and even when Guerrero is poking at balls just a few inches above the dirt that appear totally unhittable, his strength/bat speed is so good that the ball still jumps off his bat and into the gaps." Da fuk is that?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Man, our depth sucks. Only two players can reasonably make an appearance this year and neither are pitchers.
King Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2017 Author Posted April 4, 2017 Man, our depth sucks. Only two players can reasonably make an appearance this year and neither are pitchers. SRF? Tellez Urena Gurriel McGuire Ramirez Greene All guys I wouldn't be surprised if they got MLB service time this year? Harris or Rios if they peform above expectations
King Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2017 Author Posted April 4, 2017 Alford could be up in September
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Man, our depth sucks. Only two players can reasonably make an appearance this year and neither are pitchers. We have a ton of guys who are slated to possibly debut in the next couple seasons.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Man, our depth sucks. Only two players can reasonably make an appearance this year and neither are pitchers. Back to back ALCS appearances...sometimes you can't have your cake and eat it too.
King Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2017 Author Posted April 4, 2017 Back to back ALCS appearances...sometimes you can't have your cake and eat it too. The Dodgers are a regular playoff contender and have one of the deepest farm systems in baseball, and the Cubs have a fairly deep system too. There's a world in which teams can have a good farm system and be a playoff team... Boston had/has an insanely deep farm system over the past 2 years. AA trading near every prospect in the system is what stunted the team. But to your point, that's how you end up with Donaldson, Tulo etc.

Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Eric Logenhagen said the previous regime targeted mostly college pitchers, what is he talking about? No, he said the last few years that the Jays targeted mostly college pitchers. He's guessing the new regime isn't going to go with the high upside prep pitchers in the draft anymore.

"The team has mostly hunted college pitching in the draft for the last five to eight years but is under new management now." Which is almost certainly not true. AA had a high-ceiling draft philosophy where he targeted mostly raw high school arms (Sanchez, Norris, Syndergaard, Nicolino) mixed with some high-upside college arms (Hoffman, Stroman). Longerhagen might have been referring to Ricciardi's preference for college arms, which was certainly true, or he just misspoke.

There are a few things in the article that are factually incorrect but it's hard to fault him for it.

For most of AA's tenure he went with high school pitching predominately early in the draft. But he started going with a lot of college players later in his tenure.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 The Dodgers are a regular playoff contender and have one of the deepest farm systems in baseball, and the Cubs have a fairly deep system too. There's a world in which teams can have a good farm system and be a playoff team... Boston had/has an insanely deep farm system over the past 2 years. AA trading near every prospect in the system is what stunted the team. But to your point, that's how you end up with Donaldson, Tulo etc. Dodgers and Red Sox also spend a lot more money than the Jays do. The Cubs are the gold standard. Every team in MLB envy's them.

The draft (and partially IFA system) is limited by having max slot bonuses.. thats not an excuse. It doesn't work like that.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 The draft (and partially IFA system) is limited by having max slot bonuses.. thats not an excuse. It doesn't work like that. Being able to sign David Price instead of selling off top prospects to acquire talent doesn't help keep your farm system stocked? I get your point King. Draft well and you'll always have a strong farm system....there are teams that can contend annual, while still maintaining a strong farm system. That said - there are a number of factors that influence how feasible it is to do that and teams are often faced with the decision to sell some assets to try and win - or to stay the course and hope the development approach ultimately pays off.

I think it is also worth noting that the Cubs went through some very bad years to get higher picks. The Jays have never been willing to tank or sell off in the past due to the want to keep the viewership numbers up for the parent company.

The Jays have never been willing to tank or sell off in the past due to the want to keep the viewership numbers up for the parent company. Prediction, mphenhef has no understanding of what baseball was like in the 2000s in this city, how dead it got, He is just a casual fan who came on in the 2015 and has an opinion about everything
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 Dodgers and Red Sox also spend a lot more money than the Jays do. The Cubs are the gold standard. Every team in MLB envy's them. Yeah one championship and a hundred years of garbage baseball is forgotten. The Gold Standard Win once every 100 years.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 I think it is also worth noting that the Cubs went through some very bad years to get higher picks. The Jays have never been willing to tank or sell off in the past due to the want to keep the viewership numbers up for the parent company. Yeah and plus it's not like the Cubs situation is easily replicated. Not every draft has a Kris Bryant available as the 2nd pick, not every former prospect that is obtained from a team that gives up on the player turns into Arrieta, and not every team can justify giving a 6 year $155m contract to a proven 30 year old frontline starter like Lackey.

mphenhef Verified Member Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 Yeah one championship and a hundred years of garbage baseball is forgotten. The Gold Standard Win once every 100 years. I am not referring to the previous 108 years here. I am referring to several years before when they were given the go ahead to tear down and acquire young pieces and higher picks. I will see if I can dig up the article I found about this.
