jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 I thought a.j jimenez was released? In all seriousness though, hope he's okay. Head injuries are scary stuff.

AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 It's only a matter of time before pitchers wear some sort of head protection. Probably makes more sense to wait until someone dies though.

I dunno what the solution is, but it would be nice if they could use some type of screen.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 And if the ball hits the screen. How are we ruling it. An automatic base hit? Don't see why it wouldn't just remain in play like it does when it his the OF wall.

They're going to have to grand-father some sort of gear in.

I don't know but unless they go full on John Olerud i don't know what can be done..... I am with Boxy thinking a Hat with padding is not going to make a huge difference.

Pitchers won't go for it, it'll need to be grand-fathered in.

Even if it's not the proper full solution (and it's not) better to have a small solution now while the correct solution gets figured out. I await the players stupid reactions to comfort being more important than safety.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 It's equipment why would you rule it differently? A lot would have to happen. Depending on how large this screen is you're virtually eliminating the pitcher as fielder. We could see real negative effects to the actual game like more bunting for example. More soft liners can result in hits. While a ball that is torched hits the screen and deflects to a fielder for an easy play. I just don't think it will ever happen. Or should happen. It's just an unfortunate thing that happens in the game of Baseball. s***** things happen.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 There will never be screens in front of the pitcher. Next suggestion.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 There are new strong lightweight materials out there now.... probably at some point there will be a helmet with a shield in front that doesn't interfere with the pitching motion. someone will be the first jacques plante of baseball

The practicality of a screen just doesn't make sense. Some sort of lightweight helmet with padding will eventually happen. But even then, once the materials and style is made and agreed upon, look at how different all these pitchers finish their motions in while the ball is being struck, different pitchers would need padding in different places.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 For the record I don't ever think they will go with shields but these will eventually become standard http://sports.cbsimg.net/images//visual/whatshot/CbB75YAW8AAcrfo.jpg

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 There will never be screens in front of the pitcher. Next suggestion. It would affect other aspects of the game. A fielder grabbing a bunted ball might end up with the screen in his way. Catchers won't be able to catch stealers at second. Any throw to the plate will be obstructed. Pitchers need to wear equipment, period. Maybe something with a simliar design as a football helmet: hard surface + face cage.
