I would like to think this rule is only in place to protect pitchers for this tournament. Otherwise it's incredibly dumb.

So if I understand correctly, the extra inning stuff doesn't count in your team run differential? I feel like that's only fair.

Man how things could have been for Colombia this game.

 

Just crazy. What an upset that would have been. The play at the plate was unbelievably clutch. So many things had to go right for them to make that out. And it was the right call at the plate.

So is it like the winning team won by one run? Otherwise the game ended in a tie in terms of runs scored/allowed.

good thing Canada only has to win by 3.... yikes

 

Canada has fallen of the face of the planet in baseball. This is not a good showing. Didn't expect them in the final but I didn't expect them to be staring at their hands because they got their asses handed to them.

Just a really weak roster. They need to stop giving roster spots to washed up guys. Ryan Dempster can't hit 90 anymore. He hasn't pitched since 2013. He shouldn't be out there embarrassing himself. Poor guy really looked crushed. He wants to compete but he just can't and he shouldn't be teased like this just because he's willing to do it. Given the loose eligibility requirement, you could probably fill the roster with hungry minor leaguers who would give you more of a chance.

I agree... too many guys on the roster because of who they used to be.

The way they determine eligibility is quite forgiving. Basically, if you've heard of Jews, you can play for Israel.

As I said before I'm sure Canada could dig and find connections but then you are undermining guys you need for tournaments with legit eligibility. Can't say "sorry Malo, we just found out that that Addy Russell has a Canadian cousin, you are out....but because apparently you are the only Shortstop in this country (not including Russell Martin), we need you to leave your semi professional team for Pan Am qualifying".

you sure bet Freeman regrets playing for Canada. He's not going to suit up after this fiasco

 

Well it's not like he'd necessarily even get asked by the US...

Hopefully being relegated is just what this program needs to make changes and make things happen. If you're a Canadian baseball player you would think you would want to show people your country loves the game. Watching your team get embarrassed on National TV should be a wake up call. Even though Dempster shouldn't have been pitching. Hopefully he can help pave a way for inspiring guys to pitch for their country. This tourney leaves me so empty because we can do so much more. Maybe not in this group but we could have been more competitive.

It's tough to invest much effort, time or money into it though. a deep run might have some impact on baseball in Canada, but no where near the impact that the Jays have had in the past two years. So you send the invites out and if they say "no" you don't push the issue or offer them first class flights and upgraded everything like Israel did. The end result isn't worth it here. It's not embarrassing at all to me, it's a product of the system.

Osuna into the game with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th, and Mexico leading 11-9.

 

Gives up a base hit to the first batter (Alcides Escobar)

 

Edit: Walks the second batter (Ender Inciarte)

Edit 2: Strikes out Robinson Chirinos. Altuve batting now with 2 out.

Edit 3: Altuve flies out to end the game. Mexico wins, and now faces Italy on Monday for a play-in game.
