TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Citing it being too popular as the reason. I always thought the thing was stupid but they better add in benefits to the STH or this is a real head scratcher
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 I always looked forward to watching the stream. But when the offseasons are low-key like this it can't be fun for the FO.

So they're canning it because they know they'll be asked questions they don't want to answer? Ie. The mismanaging of the Edwin situation?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 So they're canning it because they know they'll be asked questions they don't want to answer? Ie. The mismanaging of the Edwin situation? Probably has something to do with it.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 In the 2014 offseason the FO only answered screened questions because they knew they were gonna get shat on. The only difference at least that criticism was legitimate, now they're probably gonna have to deal with mouth breathers complaining about dumn s***.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 This type of thing is what bad teams do to generate interest in the team. The Jays are coming off back to back playoff appearances, a surge in attendance, and probably a good amount of attendance expected in 2017. No need to do it now. Plus as mentioned the idiots who attend those things will probably boo Shapiro while genuflecting in front of Gibbons, so screw em.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 But... the free food and drinks???
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 The Jays have always done this regardless of how the offseason went so you can bet there will be some belly-aching over this. Some teams prefer to do a kind of fan fest in the offseason instead of something like this which would be fine. They would still get accused of avoiding questions but at least they wouldn't also get accused of stiffing the fans. I'm surprised by this and I'd really like to hear the rationale.

You can ask them at the State of the ... oh, wait. Yeah, this seems kind of weird. Perhaps with what seems like an unusual number of free agents still available (and a few holes), the front office needs to focus all their time there.

The funny thing about "avoiding questions" is that Shatkins reveal more information in every radio hit than AA did his entire tenure. The State of the French Fries was just filled with hollow, meaningless answers from AA and shallow, meaningless, placating promises from Beeston.

guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 where's edwin? why didn't you sign edwin? any chances of picking up munenori? why didn't you wait a few weeks before moving on from edwin? the average attendance was a near sellout last year, why can't we spend like the yankees now? who is gonna play left field, is melky cabrera an option? something something opening day starter won't be missing this event tbh!
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 (edited) Its not about avoiding questions or anything like that, its about money... They didn't want to pay for all the food and alcohol plus the employees needed to accommodate 20K people. If they replace the event with an additional benefit for STH it will be fine but to announce this and not have anything else lined up is a bad look for the organization. TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 25, 2017 Author Posted January 25, 2017 This is a front office that's on Radio more than bad Arianna Grande songs, and they are open and up-front in every interview. There is no doubt that this is about one thing which is money. It's probably half a million dollars to operate a PR event for the group of people who are not really as important in a time of success. But cancelling anything that is considered a benefit to people making a purchase (and it was still listed in season ticket packages at renewal time) it will be remembered next year by STH'ers if this season isn't considered a success.

I'm going to link to Stoeten here because he has the exact text of the message that was sent out: This year, we will not be holding the annual “Leadoff” event. The increased demand and rising fan interest in the Blue Jays over the last couple of seasons has caused us to re-evaluate select offerings. Instead, all Season Ticket Member events will be hosted during the season, including an opportunity to attend our popular Fan Festival and Autograph Session. Full details regarding Season Ticket Member events will be communicated shortly. http://bluejaysnation.com/2017/1/24/blue-jays-cancel-state-of-the-franchise-season-ticket-holders-event There's really no indication in that message that there is a specific measure in place to make it up to the fans. They'll have to scramble to find something.

They obviously screwed up on Edwin (so did his agent... both sides messed up). Don't think there's a legitimate argument against that.

Other teams in the league hold 3 day events in the Winter and have a bunch of players and alumni there to sign autographs for the fans. The Blue Jays one is held while the team is on the road and basically its just watching the game on the big screen with a few activities and food.

fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 State of the Franchise doesn't make sense with this new regime because they are constantly more open and they always talk to the media. Plus we went from only having AA to comment to both Atkins and Shapiro (Beeston talking to the media added nothing of value), so what more are they gonna tell us that we don't already know? But I agree with Hurl, there should be some new perk added in then, but I'm sure they'll find something to add

A lot of people go there to be able to talk/meet management and partake in some adult beverages and food.
