george09 Verified Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 How expensive is Moss going to be? Wouldn't mind Pagan either, but Moss is younger and should be a better defensive player in the outfield. Get him for 1/5, trade Carrera to save a mil, and good to go. Doubt moss costs more than 8M
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Moss ticks a lot of boxes for us....but I find it hard to get on-board with another player with a K% in the upper twenties. Maybe contact is a new fad or something, but I'd rather see us mix in another hitter who doesn't strikeout so much...

What if the tying run is on 3rd with 1 out late in the game

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Is Smoak the worst backup 1B at béisbol? Could the Jays sell him to a Japan team?

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 I'm still triggered that Iannetta signed for 1.5M.
Gary Verified Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Kurt Suzuki should be Shartkins target at backup catcher.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 If that 1.5M helps sign one more above average regular, I'm more than okay with Jimenez as the backup. I did like Iannetta too, though.

Ianetta wouldn't want to play behind Martin, he see's a window at much more playing time.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 So you want more Smoak do ya??? I want Moss to replace Smoak in the lineup. It was in reference to Moss over a slap hitting outfielder like Aoki/Pagan

We have no reliable information on his framing and the arm hasn't been the same since his injuries. People were so upset with what Thole did, but they want a crappy journeyman to take his spot? He doesn't bring anything more to the table than Thole did. We need to go out and get a veteran backup, leaving Jimenez as the replacement level depth player.

Wins are Wins... we can all agree on that.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Thole sucked and I whined about him with the rest of us but his impact was really kind of negligible. And in fairness to him he really had quite a difficult job in catching a trick pitch once every five days while getting no other reps whatsoever. I'm all for picking up a decent vet to back up Martin but I'm not really sure if it's a spot worth spending any of the remaining cheese on when AJ is right there.

Yup, Thole was dealt a bad deal following RA around, no repetitive games played, minimal action, that's really tough in the MLB. It made him some decent money, but not a chance to break through, if he could.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Who? His defense is as called by the FO elite. So, seriously, who? Trade targets will become available during spring training, perhaps Kevin Plawecki. We could also look at free agents like Ryan Hanigan or Steve Clevenger. We know that Hanigan is a great defender and can get on base a bit, which is already better than best case scenario for Jimenez. Clevenger has a lefty bat and has hit a bit in the past to go with decent D and framing.

Well a decent backup means that Martin can be rested more without seriously weakening the team. And I doubt AJ provides that. The problem is why would a decent catcher want to be a backup, and (as you say) even if we found one, it wouldn't be as cheap as going with a minimum salary guy.

Depth is a good thing, especially at catcher. Nobody is advocating spending a bunch of money on Wieters or something, just 1-2 million or a minor league deal. There are a bunch of backups out there and not a lot of jobs. They aren't in a position to make high salary demands.

Hanigan is good behind the plate, you know I always liked him, but why pay when you can likely get the same thing from AJ... relative to WAR. I don't see any upside or difference in those names.

We have depth... in Jiminez/McGuire or Ohlman. If Martin goes down long term we're f***ed regardless. They'd have to trade.
King Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 I wanted Michael McKenry but he signed with the Rays.

Defense: OK Pitch framing: Opinions vary Working with pitchers: Excellent Hitting: Good Arm: Poor
