BTS Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I really doubt it. When Smoak was extended the team probably viewed the extension in part as an insurance policy. I don't think they would avoid making an upgrade because Smoak has a $4M contract I guess it depends on how firm that rumoured 5M in budget space is. 9-10M gets them a pretty good upgrade in the OF or 1B, but 5M probably doesn't.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Is a Jose Reyes trade a crazy idea? Stick him in LF/RF and lead-off for ya? Cost would be minimal and the Mets have to shed salary. He has no interesting in leaving the Mets. And after Toronto ran Escobar out of town after his forced apology tour, I doubt anyone with a checkered past would consider Toronto. I mean, our announcers can't even say the word 'Indians' here, so how are we gonna deal with someone accused of spousal abuse?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Could Shartkins trade Smoak for a backup catcher, as a salary dump type move? Absolutely Some team with 3 mediocre catchers might bite Thank f*** we don't have to worry about having g someone to catch Dickey anymore
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Trade Smoak and a prospect 4 D'Arnaud
Gary Verified Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Absolutely Some team with 3 mediocre catchers might bite Thank f*** we don't have to worry about having g someone to catch Dickey anymore Any teams that might be potential trade partners?
Ehjays Verified Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 After signing Bautista, Davidi said it would probably leave the Jays with $5MM left from their expected $160M budget to fill out a LH reliever, backup catcher. I don't think we're getting Michael Saunders or a LH bat for that matter. I thought I read that our budget could be 165....
Governator Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 After Navarro's season, surely he'd be avail for dirt cheap? Not sure if he's a fit anymore but Steamer still likes him.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I would be fine with rolling with bj Upton in LF
Governator Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I'd be fine with Pompey in the OF over any of them and Pearce or Bats at 1B. f*** Smoak.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Carrera is on the team and Gibby loves him. He'll be starting in LF. Just typing that out disgusted me, but I know it's going to happen, so preparing for it now.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 This off-season is turning out well. I think we were all resigned to getting one of the two big bats back. None of us expected the team to commit to less than $50M in doing so. The crybabies crying over this off-season can think of it this way. The way the FO has played the hand it was dealt over the past couple of months significantly increases the chance that the team can extend Donaldson. Whether they want to do that or not is another story. But the ability to do so has gone way up. Fielding a competitive team with far less money committed than expected.

Maahfaace Verified Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 This line-up as constructed (with Bats) has a very realistic shot at outperforming last years lineup with the sticks.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Author Posted January 16, 2017 This line-up as constructed (with Bats) has a very realistic shot at outperforming last years lineup with the sticks. I find it hard pressed to replace Edwin's production and Saunders' good 1st half
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I find it hard pressed to replace Edwin's production and Saunders' good 1st half We can remove Goins full time suckage and (hopefully) Martin's atrocious start too though
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 No doubt we will miss Edwin's unbelievably steady presence in the lineup though, yes

I don't want to derail a discussion about real, actual Blue Jays news with this stuff. There's an OT board for that.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Hope Reese McGuire has a good spring training and roll with him as your backup catcher.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I find it hard pressed to replace Edwin's production and Saunders' good 1st half If Jose puts up Edwin's numbers and Pearce puts up Saunders numbers its not that hard to see. Tulo has some upside and if Martinis healthy his numbers should be better. Health and durability is a concern for this group though. Tulo, Travis, Pearce, Martin and Bautista all have had bad injuries recently.

fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I don't see the holes you keep mentioning. We can all agree that a good OF/1B would be great. What other holes are there? There's backup catcher, where it's probably unrealistic to expect anyone tangibly better than Jimenez to want to play behind Martin. There's the bullpen, which already has six good arms (Osuna, Grilli, Biagini, Loup, Barnes, Sparkman). I mean, sure, a vet backup catcher and good pen arm would be nice, but neither are really necessary. And there are still two months left to add them. We need an outfielder and more BP arms. We don't know how Grilli's arm is gonna hold especially after slowing down last year, and Loup hasn't proved to show that he's gotten back to at least being decent. The bullpen you mentioned is not post season calibre and we saw what a bad BP did to us last year and what a great BP does for other teams. But that's why I said the off-season isn't done yet, you asked as of now and I said for what they started with it's great but are the holes all filled? No, but I don't expect them to be filled either because we literally don't have the farm resources and the FA market is s***
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Best news I've heard in a while! Amazing

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I think they'll go for the best WAR/$ wherever they can get it. For example, with the money you give Blevins you can probably get Valbuena, who will give you more for your money. And for backup catcher it doesn't make sense to give one of the retreads 3M or something when they'll probably give you 0.5 WAR over Jimenez, or in the case of Navarro, probably even less. We should have more than enough money to sign whoever we want at this point in the offseason. We're way below the stated budget.
