It's interesting he doesn't harp on how s***** Pillar is at getting on base (in front of him). IMO, the lineup should be: Pearce or Martin JD Jose Smoak Morales Pearce or Martin Tulo Pillar Goins/Barney

Donaldson comes across as being the absolute man, and Gibby the filthy fun loving casual. Not sure if there's any data to back this up, but part of what Gibby says seems to hold true, about guys hitting better in certain spots. I wonder if Smoak moved up, would he get pitched to differently, or do worse for another reason? It seemed like every time Travis got moved up, he would do much worse. McCutchen has been raking since he got moved to 6th. I'd like to see some kind of Pitch F/X sort of thing that shows what pitches are typically thrown and where to each spot in the batting order.

I think Smoak is too mental. Doesn't like swinging at 3-0.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 I think hitters do prefer to hit in certain spots in the lineup. I don't know about Smoak specifically, though. Move Jose to lead off, Pillar to 8th, and move everyone else up one. So, Jose-JD-Morales-Smoak-etc. That seems to be the common sense move based on the talent involved. I'd be ok with Pearce at lead off too, but don't think Gibby has that faith in him yet.
Effit Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Just let Donaldson be player/manager.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Just let Donaldson be player/manager. Would never work. He has too much ego to coach.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Smoak should probably be hitting 4th and Morales 5th but that isn't a huge thing. Biggest problem is Pillar has been ice cold in the leadoff spot. Martin should probably be moved up there. .374 OBP this year.
Effit Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 I don't really care too much what else they do, but good god get Pillar out of there.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 I'm never going to jump on the Martin to leadoff bandwagon. He already has enough workload and will play around 75% of the games. No need to give him an extra PA two-thirds of the time. Put Tulowitzki there instead.
Ray Verified Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Partial to Pearce leading off. Finally hitting well since his rocky start. Martin wouldn't be bad. Anyone but Pillar right now. Infact, just give him a day or 2 off and play DSJ.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Dexter Fowler sure would look good in the 1 spot right now Just sayin'...
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Dexter Fowler sure would look good in the 1 spot right now Just sayin'... +1. Remember when people though Jose would come in angry and torch the league?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 I think Smoak is too mental. Doesn't like swinging at 3-0. I'd prefer of more of the team was more selective 3-0. I don't mind giving the green light sometimes, but giving it to everyone on the team, every time is... Not my preference. If you're going to swing 3-0, you'd better keyhole the motherf***er, is all I'm saying.

All he has to do is jog around the bases when JD/JB/Kendy/Smoak hit homers.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Bautista needs to go back to laying off tough 3-2 pitches. It use to be an automatic walk now he's swinging wildly at them. And he's getting breaking balls the majority of the time.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Pillar leading off again tonight... 1. Kevin Pillar ® CF 2. Josh Donaldson ® 3B 3. Jose Bautista ® RF 4. Kendrys Morales (S) DH 5. And I agree with his assessment that it's as easy to hit 3-0 as it is to hit 3-1, pitcher is still on the ropes.

Smoak's OBP is through the Roof in that count.
