Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Stanton's contract is horrendous. I don't know how he was able to get that. 13/325, opt out after six years, full no trade clause, $10m buyout at the end of his deal (team option). I mean, getting 13 years on a contract alone is enough, but he got all those other things on top of that. Crazy. Now the Marlins will be screwed because the only teams he will accept a trade to likely don't want him. It's their own fault for giving him a Ntc. I wonder if the Cardinals missing out on Stanton makes them more desperate to overpay for Donaldson in a trade. They seem really eager to make a deal. Baltimore have been getting calls on Machado, while publicly saying they don't want to trade him. Perhaps those teams that are rebuffed then give the Jays a call.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 The Mariners also acquired $1M in pool money along with Dee Gordon. I'm starting to get the vibe that they are the front-runner for Ohtani, which honestly, I wouldn't mind at all.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Ya you pretty much have to think that they believe they're top 2 to go ahead and acquire more money.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Stanton now coming up with a list of teams too? Interesting And his refusal to go to San Francisco may have saved them from making a mistake
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Ohtani Paxton Felix Leake Iwakuma Decent rotation. Do we think King Felix is done or what?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 I can't say I blame Stanton. This is what can happen when you hand out a NTC. Exactly "I'll only go to good teams with good front offices in big markets in good cities"
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Ohtani Paxton Felix Leake Iwakuma Decent rotation. Do we think King Felix is done or what? Yeah. Otani is honestly a total dummy if he wants to go to Seattle. Maybe he really likes rain. Oh well, have fun playing for a .500 team!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 If Ohtani is DH, then the M's might run an outfield with Gordon and Cruz in it. A second baseman and an old DH. That will be fun to watch.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Yeah the Marlins should never have given Stanton a full no trade clause, the contract was already extremely player friendly. IMO full no trade clauses should only be optionally put in to get someone to sign at a hometown discount when the player is happy at that team. The Marlins pretty much have to give no trade clauses after the big Jays trade where they dumped Reyes and Buehrle just one year into their deals. Players and agents don't really trust the Marlins to commit to players and probably insist on it now. Stanton and his agent had to know based on track record that there was a high probability the Marlins would try to move him before his 5/10 rights kicked in. This gave him some protection against that. Control over his own fate was probably just as important as the money for the Stanton camp. I doubt the Marlins had a whole lot of wiggle room short of pulling the offer altogether.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Yeah. Otani is honestly a total dummy if he wants to go to Seattle. Maybe he really likes rain. Oh well, have fun playing for a .500 team! Yeah, if he chooses Seattle he had his mind made up before this process began and is signing there because of it's proximity to Japan. What do they have going for them? - Their team is not good in the present, and seems to be mismanaged. - Their future outlook is bleak - They haven't done a good job keeping pitchers healthy

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 proximity to Japan This would be so weird. In practical terms, the difference in proximity between L.A. and Seattle is about a 10% or so saving on flight time. Big whoop. If he wasn't dead set on DHing, the Dodgers would have been such a great fit. Killer team, killer front office, pitcher-friendly park, fairly prestigious and marketable franchise, good media market, solid track record with Asian players. Even the Angels with all of their woes would be better than Seattle. At least you get to form a core with Trout.

They're such a boring, unimpressive team. I'm rooting for Chicago or one of the LA teams.

They have this track record of doing the bait and switch on their fans. Is it any wonder they don't have very many?

Oh well, have fun playing for a .500 team! I mean, I don't think Seattle is that great either, but we are kind of living in a glass house ourselves here so we shouldn't really comment on the future of other teams. It's not like we're going to be competing for a playoff spot in the near future lol...If anything, we should be happy the talent is spread to another team like SEA. Do we really want the Cubs/Dodgers to get that much stronger? Seattle is a very 'progressive' city, maybe he wants to drive a hybrid/recycle and listen to garage bands.

I think only BTS is the only one hung up on the idea of Ohtani going to a good team. I think most of the people who would criticize the decision would still be happy that he made the decision to go to a lousy org.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 So the Padres seem to have real interest in Hosmer. I guess you can never have too many mediocre 1B making $20M a year.

Yeah I read Wil Myers confirmed he'd be willing to move to the OF if the landed Hosmer. I mean if Myers is competent in the OF, I have no idea why they would zap his value by putting him at 1st. I guess that's why they are the Padres.

It's amazing in 2017 how a FO's can be so dumb. No logical reason why the Padres should want Hosmer at the price he's going to get paid.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 No reason any logical front office would want Eric Hosmer when Carlos Santana is better and will be less than 1/2 the cost.

The Padres once had him and Matt Kemp playing alongside each other, it was hilarious.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 I wonder if Stanton and the Angels could be a thing now.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 I wonder if Stanton and the Angels could be a thing now. Maybe they'd want him yes but they're not on his short list Unless this somehow changes his mind but...
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 I wonder if Stanton and the Angels could be a thing now. They'd need to trade one of Upton or Calhoun to fit him though. Also if San Fran's package is any indication the Angels don't have the assets to match, unless they decide to take on the bulk of the contract which would seem fitting with the organization's moto.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 I wonder if Stanton and the Angels could be a thing now. Stanton, Trout and Upton would just be silly.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Stanton, Trout and Upton would just be silly. JD, Bautista and Eddy were so fun to watch, but those 3 would be just as freaky to watch every night
