Could be....but even with his great season he's having, his career wRC+ is only 112. Same as Morales. I wouldn't touch him with a 10' pole (based on what I think he'll get).

Well what do you think he'll get? If someone signs him for 5 years or more and pays him like he's a 140 wRC+ hitter then he's probably not worth it. But if they come in at 3 or 4 years for 110-120 wRC+ of production then I think there could be some surplus value to be had. His career batted ball profile isn't all that different from Ichiro's as they have about the same GB rates and Ichiro often tries to slap the ball in to the ground. That's a pretty insane approach for a big 1B with a lot of raw pop. If you could correct that, future years could become even higher than this year's stats.

In some ways he's like a star player version of Justin Smoak with an even easier to identify-and-correct flaw to his game. Everyone under the sun is on board with the flyball revolution. It shouldn't be too hard to get Hosmer to buy in to it too.

EDIT: I'll go ahead and make a bold suggestion and state that he should showcase himself as an OF which would move him up the defensive spectrum. He's got good speed and a good arm, I bet he could handle a corner spot. Jays should sign him as a 1B/OF and work on his approach. He'd anchor the middle of the lineup for the next 4 years.

Who are we? The 2014 Seattle Mariners?

Speaking of Royals free agents, Lorenzo Cain would make sense for the Jays, but I'm sure he'll get paid a s*** ton. Likely way more than the Jays would be willing to offer. He's a better player than Fowler and the jays were interested in him, so i'm sure they will kick tires but ultimately miss out/pass when the price gets too big. Would be a good fit in right, though.

Rhys Hoskins with two more dingers. That man is unreal.

I tried so hard to get him in DDL, pre-breakout. Sigh.

Did anybody post that Otani wants to be in the majors next season?!...This is huge as much as I hope he comes to the Jays he'll probably choose somewhere else. I'm just beyond excited to see this kid play.

Me too man, he's every stats scout's dream. He's got some great tools obviously, but the prospect sites didn't give him his due.

Not going to lie, p-glad right now I didn't trade him in a deal for Salazar :P

Jays should do whatever it would take. Give him his own private jet FFS if it gets him to sign. He's gonna be making peanuts wherever he goes.

Wasn't able to see Otani when I was in Japan during the spring unfortunately. Saw a Fighters/Tigers game at the end of my trip, though he was still out with an injury. Managed to buy an Otani jersey when I was in Sapporo though, so that was cool!

Based on the posting system(assuming it dossn't change) I could see every team putting 20 mil to talk to him(they get it back if he doesn't sign). It becomes his choice where to play which sucks

It may come down to the combo of which team has the most bonus pool money to give him, and which guarantee him the chance to bat as well.

lol people got so pissed about Shatkins wanting Jay Bruce and he's having a pretty decent year. Just put Cleveland up 3-1.

The latter will be much more important to him IMO, most of the money he'll make will be from sponsorship and his next free agent contract.

Almost all of us wanted Bautista back on a 1 year deal and wanted no part of Jay Bruce. Myself included

Obviously we would have been MUCH better off with Bruce this year

Shrug. Game is unpredictable

Is that the Yankees at this point? I feel like they traded for a lot of extra bonus pool. I wonder if it'll come down to some sort of handshake agreement over a contract extension that gets it done. Considering even the biggest bonus is nothing compared to what he'd get in an open market, it may not factor much into his decision.

Front office was looking at JD Martinez in the offseason too, and look at his season. At the end of the day, most everyone was ecstatic that we got Bautista back at a good price (me included), but I guess there was a reason the front office looked at Jose as a last resort. I'm still not sure they would've signed him had it not been for Edward Rogers.
