intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2017 Author Posted January 30, 2017 Yeeesh. Cards probably only signed Fowler because they knew their first couple picks would be gone anyway. Did this saga hurt the Blue Jays? Possibly, if the Cardinal FO knew what penalty would be coming down. I think I agree with Abom that the picks should have just been eliminated. If this were simply a two-team issue, then fine, reward Houston for St. Louis's crimes. But eliminating the picks would have benefited a lot of teams who would have been waiting behind the Cardinals in the draft. And awarding the picks to Houston actually punishes Houston's AL West rivals.

Wew. So many clauses! And the options are flexible too: "He has a $6 million salary this year, and the agreement includes a $15 million conditional player option for 2018 that Holland could exercise if he has at least 50 pitching appearances or 30 games finished this year. If he fails to reach either of those, there would be a $10 million mutual option with a $1 million buyout if Holland declines to exercise it." Like this for the Rockies. If he's injured or no longer elite, they use him less and don't pay much beyond $6m and a $1m buy out. If he is elite and they are competing this season, they'll pay a lot of the bonuses this year (which will be worth it if they are competing) but then have the option to trade him once he picks up his player option, which is a high enough salary that he'd be unlikely to decline that option. I guess he could decline the player option if he's hoping to secure a longer deal but he'd be 32 by then.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Nats signed Joe Nathan and Matt Albers to minors deals. Washington is really desperate for anyone who can close.. right now, the bullpen is a concern, similar to Toronto..

Need to add Blanton and one of the lefties and were good to go

Well that's cool and all, but all of his homers and average OBP only translated to a 112 wRC+, and with god awful defense and baserunning that's just not a particularly good MLB player.

Trumbo didn't do that much better than Carter that he warranted a $40 million deal. Both Trumbo and Carter are pretty similar. Strictly power guys with high K% and bad everywhere else. Carter will get something. He'll DH for the Rays or something on a dirt cheap $4-5 million deal. I really don't expect him to go to Japan. Probably just a negotiating tactic.

You'd think Carter and Alvarez would work extensively to become adequate defensively...it might help them get a job. 1st base isn't that challenging guys. Put the work in.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 Khris Davis has won his arbitration hearing against the Athletics, reports Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports (via Twitter). As a result, the Oakland left fielder/designated hitter will earn $5MM instead of the $4.65MM figure submitted by the team. Davis is represented by Octagon.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 why go after Davis when you can get Carter for cheap
TholesWeirdEye Verified Member Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 why go after Davis when you can get Carter for cheap Would you say pick up Carter and slot him in 1B? Drop the Smoakshow? I hate feast/famine players damnit, and as much as I'd like to see Smoakie gone I can't see the Jays dropping him for nothing after signing him to that s***** contact. Unless he totally shits the bead (which no doubt he will). As of right now the Jays are going be be rolling out 2 bench guys to play substantial games which is retarded.

The way I see it, Smoak and Carter are both feast/famine hitters except that Carter is an established feast/famine hitter while Smoak is just an aspiring one. Offensively, that's a no brainer upgrade given that you're getting a more successful version of the same thing. The only caveat I can think of is the gap in defensive ability. I'm not sure how much that negates the offensive upgrade.

Certainly isn't worth $8 Million to dump Smoak and sign Carter.

On the other hand, Carter is a career 112 wRC+ hitter projected at 106, and Smoak is a career 95 wRC+ hitter projected at 93, and the upgrade is probably $4M, not 8M.
