My fav is when scouts say that a hitter keeps his bat path in the zone for a long time. That's a good thing, but a slow swing is a bad thing.

You're comparing zone coverage vs time spent in the zone. Two separate entities that aren't dependant of one another.

Those are two completely different things...

I've always found this thing amusing. How the f*** can a 60 year old man tell the difference in bat speed between several different guys?

For f*** sakes we're about a year away from having self driving cars....Surely to god there's way to actually measure bat speed, length of swing and time (or distance) in the "hitting zone" so we don't have to rely on 60 year old people and their eyes?

Lol yeah that physically makes no f***ing sense.

? You can have different angles to a swing which allows you "to keep the bat in the zone longer"

You mean a flat swing? Aka the worst type of swing?

Well one would presume that the problem is having that technology in places like Billings, MT or Eugene, OR and not necessarily the technology itself.

Gregor Blanco just signed a minor league deal with the DBacks. Definitely wouldn't have minded him in a platoon with Upton, especially for that cheap.

we have Barnes/Sparkman/Dermody and Floyd filling in the BP.

You're saying this is a reassuring thing?

Look, maybe things get pieced together and work out, but this roster should be beyond hoping for lightning in a bottle. I'll be disappointed if they don't add a piece or 2 to the bullpen, but alas the options are now slim.

What's wrong with those guys, do tell? It isn't lightning in a bottle save for, maybe Sparkman. I did reiterate getting another arm, but you're cherry picking my post. Not to mention it's now only January the 17th.

The only 2 guys I personally trust in the pen are Osuna and Biagini. Grilli's ancient and gave up a ton of deep fly-balls and hard-hit outs last year, Loups our only lefty and not a very consistent one at that and I really can't fathom why you're so confident in the guys you've been discussing.

I reckon you're taking the Bob McCown approach to building a bullpen but I'd like to see management aiming for a championship. It's well within reach. We shouldn't take the risk of punting the bullpen.

lol... I'm not going to get in this run around, no thanks.

No problem. Not looking for a debate anyhow. But I mean, to rely on Barnes/Dermody/Floyd/Sparkman?

As a fan I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I think you might be little optimistic with your evaluation.

I realize that we can always add pieces at the all-star break, but we have to remember that there's going to be a ton of other wild-card/playoff hopefuls willing to overpay to bolster their bullpens.

Last thing, have you bothered to look at their body of work, stats?

Barnes and Dermody have put up some stupidly good numbers in the minors the last two years. They're probably not much different than most of what's left on the open market, except they'll cost the min. That said, I'd love to nab Romo or Shawn Tolleson before the Rays agreement gets finalized, and of course Holland.

I'd like Feliz but apparently he's going to the Brewers for 1/6.

We could do with a couple more minor league Floyd type deals to rotate in mid season when someone like Loup or Dermody has a bad month.

Plenty of time for that to happen though.

He had a down year, but his career OBP against righties is .347. Better than Zeke. Zero pop though. You're not getting any HR's from him.

Just throwing ideas out there. We only have about ~5 million to work with and he would've been good for league minimum.

I know what you were implying, just threw a board meme on him. ;)

110 on the Max Velo workout from Kopech.

Ya I am sure the White Sox would want to see him doing this.... Likely not recommended just to see how hard you can throw..

Weighted ball and max velocity training is pretty popular now. It's also apparently well studied and safe. The driveline guys champion it

They would know more then me just seems silly and an easy way to get hurt.

if you're trying to throw as hard as possible, aren't you throwing out all mechanics and form out the window? Seems extremely risky. What if he is putting massive amount of torque on his hips/core/shoulder rather than on his arm? Doesn't seem right.
