jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 There is no scenario where you can justifiably say "f*** Edwin" in my mind. I personally just hate hearing "Edwin always wanted to be a Jay, he wanted to return there" Jays make him a 4/80 offer, he rejects. Jays tell them they are moving on, he still doesn't budge.
crmr Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I'm not even mad at the front office. Edwin was greedy and the Jays didn't wait around, good for them and sorry but f*** Edwin and his agent. Enjoy living in Cleveland where the f***ing lake catches fire. They completely misplayed the market, how is that good for them? Hard to speculate, but the way the dh market is looking now, Morales could have been looking at a 1 year deal to keep food on the table
nmrch Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Man, i haven't been following the market since the end of the season at all and haven't kept up with the signings and trades. This is so crazy, i was expecting him to be a lock for 5 years 100 million, what the hell happened? Can someone summarize what changed in the last couple of months?

Gary Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 EE is a projected 2.2 WAR player next season.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 The same f***in morons saying it was a terrible job by the FO are the same ones clamoring that the Jays need to make moves now. If they got burned by not waiting on DH (honestly prefer Pearce/Morales/Pick)they clearly aren't going to do it again and wait on the OF.
Rusty_Savage Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Do you blame him for wanting to test the market? This is most likely his last chance to see what's out there. Ya it didn't develop but that's because Dodgers/Yanks/Red Sox/Cubs are all basically not wanting a mid 30s player and made other moves. But it's not like we HAD to sign morales. I would have rather waited on EE's decision. Morales strictly a dh didn't have 10 teams knocking down wanting to pay him 10m+ a year. If Torntonwas his first choice then he should have just f***ing signed and took his 80 million
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 He might actually come out ahead. Overall, he really didn't get seriously burned by declining the reported 4/80 offer. Do we know for sure that that offer didn't include a team option? You forgot the fact that he's going to play in Cleveland of all places. He went from 4/80 guaranteed in playing for a city that he liked and is not a total dump to 3/65 (potentially 4/80) guaranteed. His agent totally dropped the ball
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Cool, good for Edwin and the Indians. Glad he didn't end up with the Sox or Rangers.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 It sounds like they didn't tell him they were moving on I thought his agent said they told him that, they just didn't expect them to move on so quickly
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Why is this only about Morales? Pearce is a better, cheaper player that we got too ya know... I'll wager $50 that Morales + Pearce puts up more WAR than Edwin next season.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 EE is a projected 2.2 WAR player next season. Morales is projected to be worth 0.8 WAR player next season
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 And of course, there's a risk he'll get traded again after a season if Cleveland disappoints on attendance or misses the playoffs--anyone remember what happened with Delgado when he was signed by Miami? Dealt after one season to the Mets in a fire sale..
crmr Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I thought his agent said they told him that, they just didn't expect them to move on so quickly Perhaps they should have made that more clear?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Why is this only about Morales? Pearce is a better, cheaper player that we got too ya know... I'll wager $50 that Morales + Pearce puts up more WAR than Edwin next season. By playing 2 positions.

I'll wager $50 that Morales + Pearce puts up more WAR than Edwin next season. You can't just add WAR's like that, one player taking up one roster spot is far more valuable than two inferior players taking up two roster spots even if they theoretically produce the same war. And i'm not at all convinced that those two will out WAR EE
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Sounds like he has a 3/65 guarantee (5M buyout on the 4th year). Not far off from 4/80 He left 15M on the table quite significant.
Gary Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Morales is projected to be worth 0.8 WAR player next season My point was that others in this thread are saying EE is a 3.5 WAR player when comparing EE's contract to Morales contract.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2016 Author Posted December 23, 2016 I don't think anyone really has anything to hang their head over here. Edwin understandably decided to decline 4/80 so he could test the market. He ends up with 3/65 guaranteed, and a decent chance to get the 4/80 that was originally on the table. In the end, he'll get similar money at the cost of changing addresses, but to a very good and well-managed Cleveland team. Toronto made what looks like a fair offer in free agency, and it was rejected. They didn't want to wait on Edwin, so they secured what they think is a player who can replace a lot of what Edwin was going to bring, at half the cost. They go from Edwin to Morales + ~$32M over three years + 1st round pick. I think they're satisfied with that.

Gary Verified Member Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 He left 15M on the table quite significant. Only if he's unemployed the 4th year.
