We aren't women or politicians, we're a major league baseball team and we have no time for your nonsense.
brianf Verified Member Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 I'm kind of glad they misread the market because I want no part of EE at 4/80 while losing the pick. Now go sign Bautista... How can you be glad they misread the market? It's a mistake plain and simple. Sign either Bautista or EE and you still loose the attached pick so that makes no sense at all. Guess it comes down to having EE at 20/yr or Bautista (say at 17/year for 2yrs plus an option) and Morales at 11/yr for 28 of the total payroll. I'd rather have EE filling the hole at 1b and tossing the 8 mil toward the pen or another OF'er.

Note to Edwin's agent (and Brownie19)...technically women aren't meant to be played with as a game either

It appears nobody else in baseball does either, so it's not an uncommon opinion. High AAV + long duration for an aging player is risky business. Most are much more comfortable with Jose on a 1 year deal (some with a 2 year deal).

So they misread the market.

So they misread the market. Is it fair to criticize this? How often would you expect a GM/FO to correctly gauge the market? This might be as much as the FO establishing a reputation of not playing games, sticking to their guns and making decisive moves based on their internal evaluations. They offered EE a very good contract and gave him an ultimatum. He decided to play games and lost. If they stick to their guns then the next guy might think twice about calling their bluff.

It's more just stating reality or an observation than it is a criticism. But isn't that a big part of the GM's/FO's job? ... assessing the market fairly accurately so that you sign your guys on the best terms (for the team)? I don't have enough info to say Edwin "decided to play games." He received the Jays offer at the start of his free agency when he believed the world was his oyster and can't fault him for taking some time to see what else was out there.

So you can't fault Edwin and his agent for mis-reading the market - but you will criticize the Jays FO?
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 So you can't fault Edwin and his agent for mis-reading the market - but you will criticize the Jays FO? Both sides apparently misread the market ... (unless Edwin winds up with a huge contract somewhere.) So I do fault Edwin's agent. If Edwin was basically following the advice of his agent, then he probably isn't too pleased with his representation right now.
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 Both sides apparently misread the market ... (unless Edwin winds up with a huge contract somewhere.) So I do fault Edwin's agent. If Edwin was basically following the advice of his agent, then he probably isn't too pleased with his representation right now. Edwin has said that he wishes he could play in Toronto. I know that sounds like something all free agents would say but he seems very genuine with his feelings. I really believe his agent mislead Edwin that he could find a better offer elsewhere without scouring all clubs during the week deadline the Jays gave him. He really didn't take the $80MM deal (and perhaps more importantly the deadline) seriously enough and gambled that once the CBA was signed more big spending clubs would be calling him. I imagine there are a lot of scumbag agents that try to take advantage of their clients for personal financial gain. I mean it can't be hard to convince players who have never really been in Edwin's position to take this deal just because it's $5MM more than the team he actually wanted to play for. Agent collects an extra $150K for that added $5MM, meanwhile the player is now on a long term deal for a team he once despised.
