Got to admit that Dexter appears to be a True Card type. Another player who aligns with Matheny's religious views too.

As we see free agents sign I think of a quote from the man I worship.

"If you do what you rationally want to do, you will finish third on every free agent."
- Andrew Friedman.

Yeah if its more than 4/70, I can totally understand Shatkins passing on Fowler. Also if he gets 5 years, it's understandable.

Although I REALLY wanted Fowler

Transcribing what Shapiro said on Tim and Sid: "I tend to believe that the best work done in an off-season is we need to internally frame what our values are, understand what we think are acceptable in years, understand what we think the right price is whether it's trades or free agency, and have that in our minds when we head in. If you don't do that, you're apt to get carried away and those are the deals you end up regretting whether they are trades or free agents".

Jays made an offer they felt Fowler was worth, wouldn't budge on it, and the Cardinals blew it away. That's likely what happened.

We shouldn't be surprised man! Mentioned that we aren't signing Fowler, Bats or EE.

I hope you like Saunders, Moss or Revere ;)

They've already added Gurriel, Morales, and Pearce. It's not like nothing productive has happened.

Fowler's deal expected to be big with stl, as @dgoold said. Unconfirmed, but word is 5 yrs, at least 16M/yr. 80/9M is rumor

what a joke. Attendance was up almost 20% and the Jays lead the AL in attendance numbers and were 3rd in the entire MLB. TV numbers have tripled over the last 5 years and that's not including the playoffs which had 4 million plus viewers or sportscentre drawing more than a million viewers following games....and the Jays are on track to reduce payroll this year.

We're sitting at like $140 right now signing Bautista would push us to $156 at least and getting Seth Smith for example at full salary puts us at $164. That's even before Iannetta and the relief pitching, not sure what's wrong with that salary number

At $135 last time I checked

I told myself I would reserve judgement on this management group until after their first season, and I know it is still early this offseason, but it is really starting to feel like this management group likes to shop in the clearance aisle only. I mean there are token offers on big name guys that are enough to say they tried, but not enough to land anybody of significance, and then when EE's price point is down, it's the that ship has sailed routine. We were pinching pennies on trying to land Fowler. St. Louis doesn't F-around and gets the player they want. Good organizations like the Cubs, Dodgers, Red Sox generally do that. They made shrewd rotational moves last offseason that panned out, but it is a lot to expect that kind of production again this year top to bottom.

Our organization has made a boat load of money, but management seems afraid to spend any of it. Boston has just manned up in a big way, and the Yankees are starting to rearm. We have a two year window. It is time Shatkins realizes they aren't in Cleveland anymore and that they there is no need to pinch a nickel so hard you squeeze the s**t out of the beaver. Spend some money and fill our needs properly. I am sorry, but Morales and Pearce (although I don't mind either of them as players) are not an adequate replacement for Bautista and EE.

I'm not saying i would have signed Fowler for this or that, but if management really likes a player, who is coming off a good year waiting around isn't going to be successful.

They must be on plan c or d by now, lol

Couldn't agree more. I'm already sick of Shatkins and their ******** corporate speak.

The Yankees had to re-arm because they did what you're advocating doing and things got so bad that they couldn't even win on a 200M payroll. And the Tigers are two years into what will be at least the better part of a decade of irrelevance thanks to Dombrowski.

St. Louis is a good example of a team that's had a lot of success operating in a way that Shapiro has demonstrated that he wants to operate here: make low-risk additions and supplement a home-grown core with low-mid tier short-term free agent deals. They don't want a two-year window. They want to compete every year. And a 160M payroll is enough to do it if they don't make irrational free agent mistakes.

They also made a 4/80 offer to Edwin which was turned down, and a 4/60 offer to Fowler which was apparently trumped big time by the Cardinals.

Lots of off-season to go.

Although, I get a sense the buzz around the Jays in the next few months will resemble the Sportsnet comment section, and that's going to be mad annoying.

Some of u guys need to get a grip. This isn't Griffey jr that Atkins passed on. He's a slightly above average player coming off a career year. Given his age and the bloated contracts already on the book to aging players, it's very understandable to look elsewhere.
