Though if he did, we'd have a year of angry Jose trying to hit every single ball out of the stadium. Not sure that's a good thing to be honest!

Nah... he wouldn't change his approach, he's too smart a ballplayer for that. The only thing that tailed off was his power, and I believe that had more to do with coming off the DL/injury.

Why would it be any different than last year? or do you think he'll be extra motivated after feeling snubbed by the FA market.

Batz and he's Ego will not let him take less then the 17.2 mill purely on pride for a season!

I still think him and his ego having already cost himself millions will retreat.

Batz and his ego will sit and sit and sit till, the pick is removed and he can maximize his earnings on a short term deal and try again next year!

Wouldn't shock me if Jose ends up taking a 1 year deal worth $15-16 million from the Blue Jays in late January, especially if EE signs elsewhere and if the team hasn't brought in another solid corner outfielder/DH bat.

The thing is, Beltran is a couple of years older and had a better season than him last year, and he's most likely going to get in the 12m range. So, I think JB would be wise to take a multi year deal because he most likely will end up with less money in the future holding out. Next year he'll be 37, realistically does he think he's going to get 30m/yr offers lol and Beltran who put up 1.7war last year is going to get in the 12-14m range? Even if he puts up 2war this year, he's not getting over 16m/yr as a 37 year trying to sign a short term deal. If he had any 3/40-45m/yr deals, he should take it, and if I am the Jays I'd make that kind of offer. I know it's a gamble but he's in great shape still.

He'd be massively pissed off if he had to resign with us at what he would see as a large discount.

But TBH it was a joke, he would know deep down it would be his last chance at getting a decent contract next offseason, I doubt he'd be stupid enough to do anything to jeopardise his marketability, might even be willing to be a 1B/DH exclusively.

If he could go back to hitting 35-40 HR's/100 RBI with a .900 OPS with a 130-150 wRC+, he could easily get $20-22M AAV on a one or two year deal, even at age 37. If I were Bautista's agent, there is no point in holding out for a 3 year deal worth $65-70 million right now since that doesn't exist and I wouldn't even advise him to take a 3/45 deal right now. I'd encourage him to sign a 1 year deal worth $15-17 million to rebuild his value, and if he returns to some part of his previous form, then he could get $20-22M AAV possibly on a two-year deal (worse case on a one-year deal + incentives or/and club option) and then continue to go year-to-year at around that same AAV if he still is a productive bat. Similar to what Boston has done with Ortiz. So lets say if he plays for the next 5 years as a 1B/DH and hits like he has, he likely will eclipse $100 million in salary over those next 5 years. All he has to do is produce like Ortiz did into his late 30's and its definitely possible he ends up getting close to the $125 million he was asking for, only just on a year-to-year basis.

It will be interesting to see how things work out with EE. I think there's a solid chance the FO did the right thing by letting them both go (in spite of what the fans wanted). I wonder how many casual fans will ever acknowledge this (if it's true).....I suspect only a few will. It's amazing to see how quickly form irreversible opinions.

Have two more beloved players ever walked away from the same Toronto franchise like JB and EE might? I think Shatkins' names aren't worth dirt among a lot of fans if it happens, unless/until a World Series happens in the next couple of years.

Not Toronto but Ken Griffey Jr. and A-Rod were traded/left in consecutive off seasons.

Then the next year, without them Seattle won 116 games,

Crazy... they got Ichiro and Bret Boone, and in 2001 they were as good as prime Griffey/A-Rod

Great reference - and those guys were in their prime. We're losing 34 and 37 year old guys. Fans are so dumb.

Trading Doc hurt me as a fan about 10 times more than letting EE and Jose walk in free agency.

I'm surprised people didn't s*** on Delgado more.

It was obvious the Jays weren't going to pay him. And they were going to trade him to a contender. Yet he didn't want to waive his no trade clause at all. So we ended up with jack s***.

+ Shannon Stewart being traded the previous year. Everyone loved Stewart and hated that move - despite the fact I could throw further than Stewart with my opposite arm. Stewart was done shortly after leaving TO - although I doubt the casuals even noticed.

and then when he cake back the following year people heckled him from LF. Very disappointed when that happened.

I think that hurt almost every Jays fan to a point. But in the back of all our heads we wanted to see the guy win and it wasn't going to happen with the Jays. I'd put him in a different category then everyone else.

I was so happy Stieb got a ring with the Jays, he was amazing. Too bad the Doc couldn't get one.

Fair. Doc throwing the no-no in the playoffs with Philly goes down as my favorite non-blue jays moment

Maybe Doc will come out of retirement in 2018 and pitch for the Jays again - ala Stieb (full disclosure - I had no idea Stieb came back and pitched for the Jays in '98 after 5 years in retirement. That's awesome).

Doc getting traded stung for me too. I barely watched baseball in 2010 and Doc being gone was a small factor.

Doc retired because of a medical issue unrelated to baseball.

Great thinking jaysblue!

How did Doc getting traded stun anyone. It was literally the first thing on AAs plate and widely known.

Dude, "stung" not "stunned". It stung to see my favourite guy leave the team even if it was inevitable. It'll sting seeing EE wearing orange too if Houston lands him even if they offer him an unmatchable deal.

I honestly was happy to see him go. I hated the JP years and I remember Rosenthal on the radio saying we had landed 3 blue chip prospects. I thought Drabek Wallace and TDA would be the future

How naive I was

How crazy is it that the combination of the three of them have only put up 1.6 WAR? (Drabek and Wallace are -1.8)
