Blue Jays offer Cecil a 3 year contract

I think they had the right idea with Osuna and Castro, but it was poorly executed. They identified 2 young SP prospects with power arms and shady medicals/injury history that they didn't think would hold up in an MLB rotation for 200+ innings a year, and made the bullpen move to get all the value out of them they could. We are seeing this now from other teams with Edwin Diaz, Michael Feliz, CJ Edwards, etc.. even Luis Severino to some extent though I don't think the Yankees are done with him as a starter. Teams are skipping the failed starter phase when they don't believe those pitchers have a chance at sticking in the rotation, and heading straight to the "Elite Reliever" part.

 

And it's a very interesting strategy. I wonder if we'll see even more of it in the future. Another incentive for the teams to do it is that they get 3 years of the power reliever at league minimum salary and 6 years of control. There are some Jays prospects that could see the move. Greene has terrible numbers but could see an improvement in a new role as a reliever. SRF has arm problems (will he hold up in an MLB rotation?), and would post absurd numbers as a reliever.

 

I agree with the first part. With how often guys get hurt why waste valuable innings in the minors when they can pitch in the minors? That being said I don't think you move Greene or SRF to the pen because of the reasons you mentioned. Those guys still can improve a lot unlike Osuna who was very polished.

For Greene I would give him one more season to see if he can improve his numbers as a starter.

 

For SRF, it really depends on the non-public info the team has. They know the extent of his medical history, pitching mechanics and his likelyhood of being an MLB starter. If they think he has a 5% chance of sticking as a starter, why not just make the move to the bullpen ASAP?

Angel Perdomo would likely benefit from a move to the bullpen. 6'6 power lefty with a mid 90s fastball and power slider.. He would be a good prospect to pick in the rule 5 draft if he's exposed.

Keep in mind this is the guy who was blathering on after the season ended about how much he wanted to remain in TO. Maybe I lowballed it a bit much. Should have said 3/$18M.

 

And also if it is a team with a much less chance to contend for a championship, then that tells you something else about his motivation. Not that I am going to resent him or any other FA leaving. An extra $6M is quite significant on top of $15M. It would be a little different thing if a guy was offered $90M and went elsewhere for $100M (10 percent 'hometown discount' versus 29%).

Brett Cecil has made ~$10.6 million over 9 years since signing. He isn't giving anyone a discount, nor is he going to give a rats ass if the best offer comes from a team that is "contending".
