KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Yeah. It should raise a lot of eyebrows if they saw him as a negative asset and then picked him back up in the hopes that some other team would be willing to part with anything worthwhile. I can't see this turning into a Liriano situation. I don't want Bruce at all to be honest. Especially not when there's still plenty of meat left at the free agent table. This must be looking into the price on Bruce as a possible contingency if no one accepts their offers. I can't imagine he's a first choice.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 I don't know about Saunders - that knee injury makes him look like he's 90 years old out in left field - he was pretty horrible looking defensively. He can't steal bases - basically he looks shot. His offense - yikes - .178/.282/.357 in the entire second half was abysmal Bruce was pretty weak in the second half too but still a lot better .226/.301/.462 And he's averaged 25+ homers a year and a .785OPS over the last 9 years so of the two the guy is better. Especially with gimpy Col Saunders flailing out in LF. Where was this speed and non one dimensional targets they were going to go after this off season though? They signed maybe the slowest guy in the AL not at the catching position in Morales . He was dealing with the hamstring injury for most of the year and it became worse in the 2nd half. I don't think he collapses as a hitter if he's healthy.

jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Not sure how to feel about this
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Could it be possible they would want Bruce even if they manage to sign Reddick? Would give them a mix of; Pillar, Upton, Reddick, and Bruce depending on the opposition.

If they see either as an everyday player then I suppose it's possible, but I'd prefer to pair onr of them with a guy who can play everyday like Pagan.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 As I pointed out earlier ITT, if the Mets saw him as a negative asset, they would have bought him out for 1M (a relatively small sum in baseball terms). Thanks KK, wasn't aware of that. Can't imagine Shatkins giving up something of value for Bruce. Bowden has been wrong before.

My though is that they may see Bruce as not a platoon bat (they like him for some reason). Can't platoon in both COF spots. I'm not really advocating for Bruce, but they keep getting linked to him, so I'm wondering if their pursuit is not dependent on a potential Reddick signing.

I want to know what it is they see in Bruce. To have persistent interest for the better part of a year, they have to believe that he's at least a 110 wRC+ bat, and also not buy him as a -10 defender.
frizzer1 Verified Member Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Neither Upton nor Smoak can make contact at the plate...if either, or both, end up in platoons then this offense will crash and burn..

I can certainly understand their belief in the bat. I don't know what happened in those two years, but he was mashing with the Reds last year.

In NY he was actually a positive defender so maybe they feel the bad defense in Cincy was a positioning issue. If you can get the hitter he was in Cincy and the defender he was in NY, thats a 3.5-4 Win player. Thats a lot of what ifs though lol. Can't believe I just talked myself into Jay Bruce.

That's called being unbiased..or maybe biased towards your love of this front office.

Blitz Verified Member Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 Bruce hitting 25+ hr from the left side and defensively moving over to LF doesn't bother me at all at $13M. Pompey doesn't look like he's ever going to click so if u can regain a useful piece for him do it. Upton's contract is literally free this year, so if he doesn't play who gives a s***?!? ...oh and Angel Pagan is a f***ing old man - don't touch that!
Blitz Verified Member Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 Now that I think about it... The guy I'd really like to sign to play LF/1B is Mark Trumbo... Thoughts?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 Now that I think about it... The guy I'd really like to sign to play LF/1B is Mark Trumbo... Thoughts? I actually don't hate the idea but someone will pay him like he's a top notch player because of the homers when in reality he's a mediocre player despite hitting 47 homers due to low OBP, poor defense (although at 1B he's not as bad), etc.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 Now that I think about it... The guy I'd really like to sign to play LF/1B is Mark Trumbo... Thoughts? I'd like him for 1B if he comes for lie 3/40 or something. But I think he gets a fair bit more than that.

It seems he might actually be above average defensively at 1B. He could very well put up ~3 WAR there over a full season.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 Trumbo is attached to a draft pick he won't be targeted.
