Laika Community Moderator Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I thought the plan was to get younger and more athletic Lourdes Gurriel Jr. baby
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Lourdes Gurriel Jr. baby Rowdy and Ureña are near to the bigs. Couple average player?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Lourdes Gurriel Jr. baby Gurriel + 3 first round draft picks and not trading away any prospects this off season, yes. That could mean younger and more athletic by 2018/2019. In the meantime try to maintain a playoff hopeful team with shorter year free agent deals. I can buy that. I believe in this front office

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Has Bautista officialy declined the qualifying offer?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 If Bautista comes back on a qualifier, and you get pearce, fix the bullpen You can take another playoff run, and still build for the future.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Rowdy and Ureña are near to the bigs. Couple average player? Alford, Pompey, Tellez, Urena, Gurriel could all become major league fixtures in the next two years. Also McGuire, Ramirez

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I think Bautista will be one of the biggest under value signings this year, like Ben Zobrist was last year.

If he's going to reject the QO that means he's gunning for 20+MM on a multi year deal, not sure how much undervalue you are seeing

I believe in this front office Is it set in stone what picks we will have if EE and Bautista rejected their QO? NHL draft is my thing, not MLB. Trying to get more into it though.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 If Smoak plays next season we are in huge trouble. I'd take Pearce playing every day over Smoak playing vs RHP
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Surely they could eat 75%+ of his contract in a trade somewhere when a team suffers an injury? Definitely. Tellez could walk onto the team from AA and probably be an upgrade over Smoak right now.

Or if they sign 2 qualified free agents we may end up with a second.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Did Shatkins ever give an explanation of that move? It was so random but virtually silent after like they just tried to sneak it in.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 They're talking about a 1B platoon with Smoak, but...Pierce actually has better career numbers vs RHP than Smoak.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I wonder how long it would take for Shatkins to accept if someone offered to take Smoak's contract on with nothing coming back the other way.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Omfg yes plz. Holy s***, just give Pearce everyday at bats instead of telling him that he's gonna be platooned with Smoak. That might be what swings him away from signing here. He can play OF, 2B, 1B adequately so hes likely to see a lot of pt regardless I suppose.

There is not a team in the majors that has an opening for a below replacement level 1st baseman, that is making more than league minimum
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Gibbons was playing Navarro over Smoak in certain points over the last two seasons. If Pearce signs here, he'll be playing everyday. If not initially, then pretty soon into the season. Morales, Gurriel, Pearce, and Reddick would be a pretty solid off-season. Keep all the prospects + picks, too.

If the question is "who is going to value this piece of crap player", the answer is almost always the Oakland A's.

Keep all the prospects + picks, too. It would be liveable, but ultimately we will still be a 82-84 win team unless we can find the elite bullpen pieces that all the good teams seem to have.

They may want to legitimately give Smoak a full time role next year. He's never been able to really put it together, but he does have some nice tools. I don't think it's impossible to see him put up 2 WAR in a full season where he's not being jerked all over the place with playing time. It may not be ideal, but if rolling Smoak out there gives us the money to put a stud in another position, so be it. Worst case, if he really bombs, bring up Tellez. If we really wanted to roll the dice, we could probably talk to one of the Texas teams about some of their guys. A guy like Profar as a super utility would be rather interesting, or one of the 1st basemen in Gallo or Singleton could be worth a shot.

Gibby barely used Smoak in the 2nd half Why would he suddenly be willing to play him full time
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Gibby barely used Smoak in the 2nd half Why would he suddenly be willing to play him full time I think Gibby is pragmatic. He'll do whatever the front office wants. He's not a brilliant strategist, he's a good manager of people.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 Shi seems very slow to recognize that Smoak is a sunk cost. All this talk of the plans the Jays have for Smoak are coming from him.
