That whole exchange on twitter was awesome! This one cracked me up the most...

Not sure if serious? He can say what he please... retired bro.

And he is not wrong... The fact that west is an umpire in the WS is embarrassing

Wow - not sure I've ever heard someone say this...

I think it's not an uncommon sentiment among the nerd set. A lot of people want to see good process rather than bad process rewarded so they hate underdog fluky teams generally. That being said, it would be unfair to claim that Cleveland doesn't have good process. They have done a lot with fairly limited means. They have just the right tools and know how to use them and it's allowing them to beat deeper, wealthier teams. I think it's been fun to watch and yeah good fortune has played a role in their success it but it nearly always does so I'm not inclined to hold that against them.

The only thing that kind of sucks is how teams that don't have a deep rotation can play up in the postseason by riding an ace but it's not like Cleveland didn't have rotation depth. That's how they got here. It just so happens that their depth was decimated by injury which is hardly their own fault.

I personally wouldn't go talk s*** about former co-workers on social media, but that's just me. I guess i'm in the minority.

Meh... neither would I, I'd likely say it to there face.

To be fair i am sure most of Wests co-workers have already said to him on the field lol

Oh that I don't doubt... I'm just joking around, regardless. I don't see anything wrong with a retired ballplayer talk s*** about one of the worst umpires in the business, protected by a Union that the MLB can't do s*** about.

Does MLB pick the Umpires for the WS though or does the Union....

Likely the Union, seniority, PS experience, performance in that order, lol.

Was funny hearing J buck complain about a good pitch on a ball 4. Didn't hear him complain when Hendricks got the calls in game 3. Good to hear zaun really call out the umps

I wonder how many players consider umpires their co-workers. I'm sure some do, players like Tulo and the like who value their relationships with them but I'm sure a lot of players would only truly consider other players their co-workers and would only show reluctance to criticize players not the umps. Since it's really not an unfair criticism in the first place, I don't really see the big deal. It's not like he's airing out dirty laundry or anything. He's just calling it like it is from the safe distance of retirement.

There's what seems to be a fairly thoroughly researched piece on umpire selection here.

So it's a bit of both... MLB/Union working together.

MLB’s postseason umpire selection system is supposed to minimize those mistakes. “The main component in the selection of Umpires for Postseason assignments is performance during the season,” Teevan wrote. “We factor in results from the Zone Evaluation system for their plate assignments, accuracy on their calls and rulings, and observations of their work by our Supervisory staff. In addition, there is consideration given to an Umpire’s experience level (overall seniority and previous Postseasons), his proficiency at handling situations, health and time missed during the season, and a number of other administrative factors.”

How on earth has Carapazza worked a PS is beyond me... thanks for the article that was an interesting read.

That's probably the better approach than making a huge scene.

I'm sure it helps even if it's the umpire having small bias in their subconscious

wasn't Carapazza the best call % from 2010 to 2012? If I remember correctly Joe West has gone from middle of the pack to among the worst. You can't tell me age isn't a factor there.

Makes sense... not sure about Carapazza, I just know he's an invalid, and lets games get out of control, then blissfully ejects everyone. The JD situation... and the Nats in the PS come to mind.

I don't really care who wins. Just want to see a great game that is close throughout the entire 9 innings. Don't want a blowout like yesterday.

Cubs in extras bro, it's going to be epic!

If the game was at Wrigley and the Cubs walked off in extras, just imagine how crazy it would be. Probably would go down as one of the best baseball games ever.
